She has a new bedroom that terrifies her, and she's positive that something is hiding under her bed. And to make matters worse, her mother gets a job to help pay for the new bedroom. Ramona sure misses her and the cookies she used to bake. School finally starts and Ramona realizes that the first grade is not for cowards.

A funny, interesting book!

Ramona the Brave is six years old, just like me. She has brown hair like me, wears dresses like me and is in the first grade like me.

Ramona lives in a house with her big sister (Beezus), her Dad, her Mom, and Picky-Picky (her cat). Ramona is starting first grade. The first days are bad for her. She doesn't like first grade at all. It turns out better than she expected, though!

I liked it when the doggy chased her and she figured out how to get him to stop with her shoe.

Ramona is brave, spunky and a good artist. I was disappointed when the book ended. I wanted to read more about her. I'm glad there are more Ramona books I can read!

Good place to start when reading Cleary

This might be the best of the Ramona and Beezus books, because it captures the mindset of a six year old so perfectly. Ramona is a girl who tries to be good, but sometimes can't stop herself from being bad. She is interested in things like her own special version of the letter Q, which she dolls up to look like a kitty, or making a paper slipper during recess.

While the Quimby girls remain blissfully oblivious of some of the weightier problems that real life children might have to face at home, Ramona is an interesting realistic character who children will feel a kinship with. Her tribulations at school with classmates are particularly relevant.

At 124 pages, the book is longer than most books targeted to this audience, but it will be a good challenge, and the chapters remain short and simple. If you're thinking of introducing a young reader to this prolific and popular author, this might be the best place to start.

I'm Going to Say a Bad Word!

Guts! Guts! Guts! Guts!
This is easily one of the best Ramona books. It is time for Ramona to start First Grade. Prior to her start she and her sister Beezus, play in the neighborhood park and the bad boys make fun of Beezus's name in a profane way. Then when Ramona starts school all kinds of things don't go her way. Her new teacher, Mrs. Griggs seems not to like her, because she never lets Ramona take attendance or lead the pledge of allegiance. Then she gives another student a passing grade for plagiarizing Ramona's art project. After Ramona destroys the classmates plagiarism, she has to apologize for show and tell. But my favorite part was when Ramona's family laughed at her for saying the word "guts."

Pradip K. Ghosh received his Ph.D. from Indiana University and did his postdoctoral research at Rice University. For most of his career he was on the faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and recently taught as Visiting Professor at Pomona College and University of California Berkeley. Grade 5-7-This powerful collection takes readers on a sometimes harrowing journey through the nightmare that was apartheid South Africa. The stories take place at various times between 1948, the year that marks the beginning of apartheid, through 2000. The main characters, who come from different ethnic and economic groups, are all children, and Naidoo's reliance on a child's perspective ensures that the material remains emotionally manageable. The author's touch is deft and sure, as she captures the ordinary details of life, along with the racism displayed in the speech and attitudes of white South Africans. In one of the most wrenching stories, "The Noose," a boy of mixed race relates how on his birthday his father was reclassified "African," thus imperiling not only his job, but even his ability to live with his family. Other stories tell of the white daughter of politically progressive parents who is trying to negotiate the racist world of her friend's parents, and a black African girl whose grandmother is drawn into helping her activist granddaughter during the Soweto uprising of 1976. The final story, about a middle-class boy of Indian descent who comes to feel a connection to a child living in a neighboring squatter settlement, leaves readers with the hope that human kindness will eventually triumph over the divisions among people. A time line of apartheid laws linked to the stories helps to establish the social and political context. As well as enriching any study of Southern Africa or human rights, Out of Bounds will be embraced by children seeking to expand their understanding of the world and other people.

What was it like to be a "Coloured" (mixed-race) child under apartheid and be separated from your father when he was reclassified as black? To be a white boy shunned at school because your "Commie" parents have "native" friends? To hear your mother ordered around and called "girl" by her white employer? Or to be one of the first black students in an all-white school that doesn't want you? More docudrama than fiction, this book doesn't have the depth and complexity of Naidoo's The Other Side of Truth (2001), but Naidoo knows her country's history--the crude, ignorant racism, the suffering, the courage--and her diverse young viewpoints bring the politics of oppression and struggle into daily life. This will be an invaluable starting point for group discussion about contemporary South African history, especially when read with the introductory historical overview and the endnotes about each decade. Archbishop Tutu's moving foreword speaks of the incredible absence of revenge and retribution in the new South Africa, and many of these stories show that hope lies in personal connections. About the Author

Beverley Naidoo grew up in South Africa under apartheid. She says: "As a white child I didn't question the terrible injustices until I was a student. I decided then that unless I joined the resistance, I was part of the problem." Beverley Naidoo was detained without trial when she was twenty-one and later went into exile in Britain, where she has since lived.

Her first children's book, Journey to Jo'burg, was banned in South Africa until 1991, but it was an eye-opener for thousands of readers worldwide. Her characters in Chain of Fire, No Turning Back, and Out of Bounds face extraordinary challenges in a society she describes as "more dangerous than any fantasy." She has won many awards for her writing, including the Carnegie Medal, the Jane Addams Book Award, and the American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults for The Other Side of Truth, about two refugee children smuggled to London who are also featured in Web of Lies.

I purchased this book to supplement my homeschool curriculum. I needed stories based in Africa and these fit that bill. It is a great way to use short stories to educate kids about the daily realities people faced in South Africa due to Apartheid throughout time. The stories gave them the perspective they needed, as well as teaching about general life in there as well. I recommend this for educators!

Draw The Circle: The 40 Day Prayer Challenge

First of all, this book is a 40 day devotional with most of the chapters ranging from 4-5 pages, but I didn't take the 40 days to read the book. I read through it whenever I had a moment to spare. Most of the chapters only took a precious few minutes to read through, but the content stuck with me. "Draw the Circle" changed my outlook on prayer. Prayer isn't something we should just do when we get up in the morning, go to bed at night, or something to say before meals. Don't get me wrong...I make an effort to pray throughout the day, but this book has definitely changed HOW I pray.

The author (Mark Batterson) explains the importance of having faith when we pray. Meaning if we are going to pray to God asking for a miracle, shouldn't we have faith that God will do it? We shouldn't be doubtful of God's ability to answer our prayers just because He may not answer them the way we expected. Batterson even suggests "drawing a circle" around the things we are praying for. For example, Batterson is a church planter and when his church was trying to figure out where God wanted them to plant their next church, Batterson took a prayer walk around the perimeter of the area they were looking at. He prayed through a 4 mile circle, asking God to show Him where to plant their church. And God provided an answer to Him.

There is no gimmick involved in the truths Batterson writes about. If we pray for God to show us miraculous things, He will. "Draw a Circle" around your failing marriage, your illness, your child who doesn't know Christ and your money problems. Pray without ceasing and see God answer in miraculous ways. Sometimes He answers yes, sometimes no, and sometimes it's a not yet but He always answers. Have faith that God will do what He says.

I think everyone would benefit from reading "Draw the Circle" by Mark Batterson. It's changed the way I talk to God, and how I view prayer! I would recommend this book to everyone I know, and I hope to get this book in our church library so more people are able to read it! Definitely 5 stars! Loved it!

Exceptional opportunity to read a devotional on prayer that is as person to person application of our opportunity to experience Grace and God in a daily time with Him. Having read more current books by Batterson and knowing more about his church, I feel this material is at the top of his list because he brings us to the throne in application of our time with God. Exceptional and I rate it a must have.

Ellis's tale contains dozens of sub-plots and numerous characters up and down the social spectrum. Though predictable, the narrative will please romance fans, to whom it will hardly matter that the resolution of the murder is compromised and contrived.

Basing its opening on the real-life Mary Phagan/Leo Frank murder case, this novel tells of Laura and Iris, orphaned daughters of a Southern Jew, who was lynched after being unjustly convicted of murder. Forced from their home, the girls make a new life for themselves in New York: Iris becomes the quintessential Twenties flapper while Laura marries and goes to law school, vowing to avenge her father. Though both deal with assorted disasters, Iris acquires a title and a fortune and Laura, a real estate empire; and then more troubles loom on the horizon. Sweet revenge

When Jacob Roth is falsely accused of the rape and murder of a young girl in the small Georgia town of Magnolia, he is dragged from the jail and lynched by the KKK.His teenaged daughters, Laura and Iris are forced to leave town by the bigoted residents who are under the influence of Judge Slocum who presided at Jacobs mockery of a trial.The two girls flee to New York where they take menial jobs and live a hand-to mouth existence. Iris is determined to have a life filled with glamour and wealth while Laura is equally determined to become a lawyer so as to be able to clear her fathers name.. Iris heads for Hollywood and a brief career as a silent movie star while Laura meets and marries a young lawyer who helps her in her quest for a law degree. Iris eventually marries a member of the British nobility for his title and money, while Laura becomes a real estate tycoon. This is one of those older books which are full of interesting characters and situations and one which I'm sure will appeal as a big, comfy read to a lot of people.

About the Author
David Halberstam (1934–2007) was the author of 20 books, the last 14 of which have been national best-sellers. His most recent book, The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War, is about the Chinese entry into the Korean War. He was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his reporting in Vietnam and was a member of the elective Society of American Historians.

Know thy enemy

Nations at war like to demonize the leader of their enemy as part of propaganda. This is fine as long as the nation's leaders themselves do not believe in their own propaganda, but instead do their homework and get to truly understand their enemy. This crucial step was missing from America's policy makers during the Vietnam War. Every president involved; JFK, LBJ, to Nixon, did not bother to fully understand Ho Chin Minh, the leader of the Vietnamese Communists. This is why books like this one are so important; written by private individuals, they offer unbiased, insightful glimpses at the other's leader.

This book by David Halberstam is one of his less read books, but being so short in length, it is probably the most focused of his books. This book describes the life of Ho, both private and public, his role in the Vietnam War, and his relations with other world leaders and governments, both before, during, and after the Vietnam War. The treatment of his private life is shorted at the expense of covering more of his public life.

The book does a good job of describing his personal traits that made him a leader: patience, self-sacrifice, humility, and foresight. The book also does a good job of contrasting his personality with others he encountered in battle; Western generals, Western soldiers, and Western politicians. The book is also worth reading because it offers a viewpoint of the Vietnam War as seen by Vietnamese, specifically Ho and his leadership.

I highly recommend reading this book; it is short and easy to read. It is also impartial and straight-to-the-point history, as expected from an author like David Halberstam.

More a statement on the mistake of U.S. involment than bio.

This book was less about Ho Chi Minh, and more about why the United States should not fight him. This reader was hoping for a more detailed discussion of Ho's life, his philosophy, etc. This book does over some insights into Ho Chi Minh's character and life, but I was left with the feeling that the book was written for other purposes. The book was originally published in 1970, a year after Ho's death so the book also smacks of the eulogy, glorification of the dead variety.
