Planning to learn German? Start with this, first.

Anyone desiring to learn German should start with this. I was initially using Edward Swick's "The Everything Essential German Book", when I came upon "TY Getting Started in German - Absolute Beginner Course" kit at my Library by accident. The one I borrowed (then, later, purchased) had an mp3 audio cd. I downloaded the lessons, first, to my computer; then copied them to my mp3 player. There are ten chapters / units, with sufficient lessons, with easy explanations, and cultural anecdotes. I just finished Unit 1, and I'm (eagerly) preparing to start Unit 2. I'll listen to the lesson on my player on my train ride to work Monday morning! The book has colorful artwork and photos - a very nice plus in the 'Teach Yourself' language series. There is grammar, which is important in learning languages. However, the grammar is concise and not long-winded. The 'Personal Introduction' and 'How to Use this Book' sections explains that in detail. I found out online that German grammar have noun cases (I think) called 'accusative', 'nominative' and 'dative'. They sound a bit deep for me - yet I will learn those in time when I read "Everything Essential German". Right now, I want to have fun learning basic Deutsch! Another good book I'm using with "Get Started in German" is Angela Wilkes' "German for Beginners". This, too, is helpful in learning basic German, and with amusing colorful illustrations. I ordered mine from Amazon.com, but from a seller in the UK. Anyway, I recommend Get Started in German (book and mp3 cd set) as a fine introduction to learning German. Best regards, and "Tschus!" :)

About the Author
Debra Marquart is a professor of English in the MFA Program in Creative Writing & Environment at Iowa State University and an affiliated faculty member with the Stonecoast Low- Residency MFA Program at University of Southern Maine. A performance poet, Marquart is the author of three poetry collections: EVERYTHING'S A VERB (New Rivers Press, 1995), From Sweetness (Pearl Editions, 2002), and SMALL BURIED THINGS (New Rivers Press, 2015). Marquart's work has received a 2008 Prose Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Pushcart Prize, the John Guyon Nonfiction Award (Crab Orchard Review), the Mid-American Review Nonfiction Award, The Headwater's Prize from New Rivers Press, the Minnesota Voices Award, the Pearl Poetry Award (Pearl Editions), the Shelby Foote Prize for the Essay from the Faulkner Society.

An Interesting Read

Small Buried Things is an incredibly varied book of poetry, with serious and emotional poems woven between silly ones that made me vocally giggle. The poems vary in quality as well, if I’m being honest. All of them are at least good enough to avoid feeling clich�; they’re all enjoyable. But there are a handful that go above and beyond that I’d like to touch on. “Door-to-Door” was probably my favorite by far. It was one of the longer poems, but it’s pacing was gorgeous and the set up and delivery of the story was masterful. It was a read that I thoroughly enjoyed from there very first line to last. “Small Buried Things” was also good, though the way spacing was done set me out of the poem the first time I read it, which was a downside. The poems about traveling through the airports felt comfortable and relatable, and her small collection “Whisker Meditations” had me reading the poems out loud to my nearby friend.
Though the poems varied from good to excellent, it’s easy to argue that there were many more poems that fall into the excellent category than there were poems that were merely good. My biggest critique is that the unique spacing in some of the poems brought me out of the mental imagery instead of into it. It worked for the author sometimes, but definitely not every time. My other main critique is her use of the term Ground Zero. While I’m aware this term is used for various things, the mental image it provokes for me at least, is not its original, generalized, meaning and I doubt I’m the only one. Now, I’m not putting this as a critique for any empathetic reason. I’m making this argument because I feel that this terminology causes the poems that use it to lose some of their power. When I read it the first several times, the mental images created were disrupted by burning towers and planes, and I do mean that the images were completely disrupted. It did not add to the severity of the situation in the poem, specifically because it took me completely out of it. This may not be as big of a problem for people of older generations who are used to hearing Ground Zero refer to anything other than 9/11, but for younger generations, the word is somewhat closely tied. Words can paint powerful pictures and can be interpreted many ways, but I feel that this word choice continually chopped into what were otherwise beautiful poems.
All of this said, the poems are definitely the buy and make for a fantastic read. The style and writing is enjoyable and relatable and Debra Marquart is definitely a poet worthy of attention.

A Collection of Seemingly Random Items.

The poems that make up Debra Marquart’s Small Buried Things are varying, ranging from reflections on life and love to object analysis to lamentations over the fracking in western North Dakota. With ideas moving in so many different directions it is hard to find a consistent thread that strings these poems together; the book, rather, functions as a curio cabinet which Marquart has filled with a variety of colorful trinkets, each one unique in itself, related to the rest only in proximity of a shared space.

The collection is divided into three sections, the most coherent being Ground Zero, which is thematically linked by the setting: North Dakota. But despite the continuity of this section, it still feels the least connected to its author. Marquart’s pleas for North Dakota to “please, wake up” in “5. Lament” read like a stiff-faced news bulletin when compared to the desperate contemplations and continuous attempts to vanquish a chin whisker described in “Whisker Meditations.”

Poems like “Buoy,” “To The Woman Who Tore The Word “Husband” From The Oxford English Dictionary,” and “Poor You” carry a tone of resentment and victimization that is self-indulgent at best. The trouble with Marquart’s poetry, then, is this: the impersonal feels impersonal, and the personal doesn’t feel universal. That is not to say Marquart cannot write beautifully; the images she creates in many of her poems are rich with color and texture, her metaphors creating familiar images from unfamiliar materials. But the end result is still one of disconnect; an observer momentarily peaking through the glass of the curio at objects another person has collected.

Debra Marquart’s Small Buried Things is a collection of poems vividly chronicling the author’s upbringing in North Dakota.

It is unmistakably clear that the poems themselves were written with pure and honest emotion; her diction is something I found highly definitive, and as a North Dakota resident myself, it is almost impossible for me not to identify with Marquart’s words in the collection’s second act—regardless of my usual aversion to poetry.

However, it was the final section of the book that struck a cord, as it were. I will not ruin it for those who have yet to read this work, but it is here that Small Buried Things is, in this reader’s opinion, the purest.

The book itself brings to mind the structure of an anthology of sorts: Each poem stands on its own and fulfills what it sets out to accomplish, yet by the time the reader finishes the final page, it is clear there is a common theme and a beautiful cohesiveness between each work.

Upon finishing the collection, I would surmise that it was Marquart’s intent to present Small Buried Things as a reflection of daily life, and I would say that in this it succeeds. Marquart writes of happy times, and some of the poems feel even carefree at times, yet she is not afraid of—nor is she apologetic in—looking into a lifetime’s darker moments and themes here and there.

All in all, it’s a small collection that is very comprehensive, relatable, and therefore easy to read. The book itself is well-made: No distracting, flashy text, simple and to the point, and well-bound and not flimsy in the least.

STOP! LOOK AND LISTEN.

You will find a good deal of information in Apocalyptic Poetry very helpful in knowing what is going on in the world around us that lines up with Bible prophecies and end-time events. These poems could be a wake-up call to many and I hope they will read the selections with an open mind verify them by ones own careful study-you may be surprised.

About the Author
Andrew Louth, born in Lincolnshire and brought up in the north of England, studied Theology at the universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh. From 1970 to 1985 he was Fellow and Chaplain of Worcester College, Oxford, and University Lecturer in Theology, teaching prinipally Patristics. In 1985 he became Reader in History at Goldsmith's College, London. He is the author of The Origins of the Christian Mystical Tradition (1981), Discerning the Mystery: An Essay on the Nature of Theology (1983) and Denys the Areopagite (1989). He has also edited Early Christian Writings for the Penguin Classics.

Early Christian Writings

Staniforth's is a superb translation of the Apostolic Fathers, the best I have ever come across. It is very readable. Each writing comes with an introdution by the editor detailing its history --- when and where it was written, etc. --- and discussing its main themes. This would make a excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in early Christianity.
The texts included in this volume are 1 Clement; the 7 epistles of Ignatius to the Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans, and Polycarp; the epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians; the Martyrdom of Polycarp; the Epistle to Diognetus; the Epistle of Barnabas (despite what one of the previous reviewers says, it's included in this volume); and the Didache.
Conspicuously absent are the Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias. Both have usually been considered Apostolic Fathers, and I am a little baffled at their omission.
Other recommended Penguin Classics: "The Jewish War" by Josephus, "The History of the Church" by Eusebius.

A Valuable Link to the Post-Apostolic Church Fathers

Early Christian Writings is an excellent collection of the works of the Post-Apostolic Church Fathers. It is for anyone looking for literature that opens a window into the Post-Apostolic Early Church. The epistles included are The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians; The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans, and to Polycarp; The Epistles of Polycarp to the Philippians; along with the Epistles to Diognetus and Barnabas. The book also includes the Didache and the martyrdom of Polycarp. For some reason Louth did not include the Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias, though he does mention them as being part of Cotelier's collection of writings by the Church Fathers.
If you are interested in the writings of the Church Fathers, and have never read such a collection, you can have some enjoyable and moving reading ahead of you. In reference to his pending martyrdom Ignatius writes, "I am His (God's) wheat, ground fine by the lions' teeth to be made purest bread for Christ" (Romans 4). He also says, "To die in Jesus Christ is better than to be monarch of earth's widest bounds. He who dies for us is all I seek; He who rose again for us is my whole desire" (Romans 6). The Epistle to Diognetus contains a vivid and compelling description of the early Christians. The second half of the Didache is full of interesting guidelines and instructions to the early believers on such things as baptism and fasting. Louth includes some good commentary about the fascinating account of the martyrdom of Polycarp.
The translation by Staniforth is very readable. The introductions by Louth are interesting, helpful, and well written. The notes following each book provide the author's commentary of the passage, assistance on difficult passages, insight into the mindset of the writer, important historical information, and other resources for further study. These early church writings are available on the Internet but I have not found any Internet sources that provide as good a presentation of the writings as Early Christian Writings. The inclusion of The Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias would have made it a more comprehensive collection. Despite this exclusion, for those looking for such a collection, I recommend Early Christian Writings.

Good for laypersons

This collection is a decent collection and translation of the Apostolic Fathers for the general reader. I have two gripes though.

One is that the Shepherd of Hermas is not included. I would imagine this was because of its length, but the collection seems woefully inadequate without it.

The second is that the verse and chapter numbers are not given in a form that makes them the least bit usable when looking up passages that are referenced in other books.

For research purposes, I would recommend the Loeb Classical Library editions or the excellent one volume reworking of the Lightfoot edition available from Baker Books edited by Michael Holmes.

But if you're not out to be the next Jarislav Pelikan or J.N.D. Kelley, then this should do just fine for some interesting and inspiring reading.

I received a copy of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review.
I want to go to this school! Or maybe the main campus. Or maybe both! I hadn't read the first book in this series, so I read this as a standalone. And it can be read like that. But although the story itself is mostly about Savannah and Margaret, Van and Maggie, a lot of the characters, even Maggie, were in the first book. There are allusions to happenings in the first book that definitely make me want to go back and read it too (the whole Ms Lucy and Clarissa story, plus Reed and Amanda, who don't really make an appearance in this second book but enough is said that you know their story is going to be good as well!). Also, the teaser at the end makes me really want to read the next book in the series, so get to writing Ms. Bacio. But back to this book.
I like the idea of this smaller campus for only women. It makes me wish there was such a place way back when I was learning about myself. Van and Maggie meet the first day of class and there's an instant attraction between them. Both are firmly trying to change things in their own lives, and this leads them to be more open to each other than I think they might have been if they'd met more conventionally. The problem with that is they're existing in almost a type of limbo, because both realize this school isn't exactly the real world. And it's when the real world intrudes into their relationship that they're actually tested. It seems like they get through these test rather well; first with Van's father, and then with Maggie's coworkers. It's the third test that messes things up, and we're left wondering if they'll ever even see each other again, much less find their way back to a relationship with each other.
There were two things that I didn't care for in this story. I don't like when my characters get together so fast. It seems that by getting together so quickly, the relationship feels shallow and almost unformed, because they don't really know each other yet. And in this story that translated into a sense of uncertainty if they were going to remain together, because you had the feeling that neither had been tested before, that they didn't know their own boundaries at all, much less the boundaries of the other person. It's hard to believe in a relationship like that, although at the same time, I wanted them together, because they were sweet and hot together. The other thing was that Maggie's reaction the news her brother's phone call brought (unnamed here because you have to have some surprises, but it's that third and final test from above) seemed almost out of character for her. I'd not seen that sort of behavior from her before (maybe in the first book?) but I certainly didn't expect it.
All in all, a good book, enjoyable and entertaining. If you like erotica with a bit of kink, I'd recommend it. I'll certainly be looking for book one and book three, as well as any others after that.
