About the Author
Hui Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and his M.S. from Portland State University. Mr. Liu is a member of the IEEE and recipient of the 1997 NSF Career Award.

Useful compilation of author's past research in CDMA

This slim volume is a compilation of some of the author's past research in signal processing for CDMA systems. Writing with refreshing clarity, the author first presents a brisk introduction of CDMA concepts, then moves on to detection and parameter estimation for both long and short code systems, using various methods based on the MOE, subspace concepts, space-time processing, with accompanying investigations of adaptive implementation and performance analysis. Especially useful are the numerous derivations of formula and proofs where every last bit of detail is shown.
A short chapter with introductory material to multicarrier CDMA comes next, and the book is rounded off by a novel scheme which combines CDMA and "space-division multiple access" to create a MAC protocol which adapts transmission to channel conditions. Although the topics covered are somewhat dated (in a relative sense when the fast pace of development in the field is considered), this book is still useful reading for those who want a better understanding of the subject matter, especially that of linear optimisation methods crafted for CDMA. Oh, and don't let the term "CDMA" mislead you; most of what's in here can be applied to 3G systems as well.

Structure is the essential element of a successful story

This book is about the most overlooked aspect of the writer's craft - the fiction novel structure. Many newbie writers, and I was one of them, just start writing stories without realising how easy it is to fall into multiple traps that would ruin their books. Some of us have an excellent inbuilt sense of the structure, others, like me, not so much, yet every writer needs to learn about the rules of storytelling at least to know why our stories are missing something or simply fail to appeal to the reader.
KM Weiland systematically goes through the macro- and micro-structure of the novel. First, she tells us meticulously about the architecture of the three-act plan stories and all the important elements of it, e.g. first plot point, inciting event, climax, resolution. Then, she writes about the structure and dynamics of the scene and the two types scenes and their variations. Finally, she discusses the micro-structure at the level of sentences and the common signs of the clunky prose.

I have started following Katie's blog for writers, Wordplay, years ago and I think I've learned from her most of the techniques described here before I even started reading the book.

"Structuring Your Novel" is a distilled and well-organised digest of dozens of Wordplay blogposts and KM Weiland is definitely the right person to give us her expert opinion. She is a successful historical/speculative fiction writer, so a lot of teaching comes from her own experience.
I congratulate the author with this new brilliant guide for writers, I'm sure it will help many of us become better writers.

A Must Read For Beginning Fiction Writers!

As a beginning fiction writer, I read lots of books on writing `how to's. Most of these books that I find most helpful cluster around topics related to plotting, character development, and story telling.

I soon learned that story structure and plot are tied together, so regardless of the genre you are writing in, making your plot work within your story structure is absolutely key to keeping your reader engaged and continuing to turn the pages of your story.

K.M. Weiland's new book, `Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story` breaks new ground. This book bridges the gap between story structure for movies and structure that works for novels and short stories.

Ms. Weiland knows whereof she speaks; she is the author of three published novels as well as several short stories, as well as a previous non-fiction book, `Outlining Your Novel.` I purchased that book, and it led me to her very useful teaching web site, which I have been followig for some time.

In her new book, `Structuring Your Novel,` Ms. Weiland discusses the principles of structuring your story as a whole, but then in the second half of the book, she breaks new ground -- at least it was new to me-- by detailing out the structuring principles at the level of a story's individual scenes. It turns out there is quite a bit to know about how to structure and order scenes so as to be successful in getting your reader to continue turning the pages. Ms. Weiland gives a very complete treatment to this, and I haven't seen any other book that gives as much information on this topic as she does.

`Structuring Your Novel...' is chock full of concrete examples of the concepts the author presents. Each story or scene level structure concept is followed up with with four examples, two drawn from well known novels, and two from films, which make application of the concept easy to understand. And, the author is consistent in using this approach throughout the book. This consistency, and Ms. Weiland's diligence in finding good examples that well illustrate her points really do make this book very useful.

To sum up, a writer who understands story structure is far more likely to write reader engaging, page turning fiction than a writer who doesn't understand the importance of it. The value of a writing book is that it can help you be a better writer. `Structuring Your Novel...' is already helping me craft better stories.

“Structuring you Novel” by K. M. Weiland is well worth a gander. I am a big advocate of outlines. I am mystified by people who say “I can’t outline my characters don’t let me.” They are figments of your imagination you tell them what to do. However, even the most diehard organic writer would benefit with a clear and concise structural basis for their novels. What is a crisis? Where should the first plot point be? What is an inciting incident, and do I need one? Is there a difference between crisis and climax?
The three act structure has been around since the beginning of written history, and probably even during spoken history. Start with a bang, build up tension, and end with a satisfying conclusion that makes the audience want to go out and read you next book.
Reading this book on structure, if you are bound and determined to write organically, will not change your mind. But maybe, if you understand how the three act structure works, you will put these principles into play.
I found this book and the accompanying workbook to concisely explain the structure and how to apply it to your own work. If you are an organic writer, you will benefit from the suggestions as you look down that long hall of revision. If you are an outliner you will be able to intentionally put in the points as you need to in your outline to make your work more cohesive.
I give this work 5 stars because the world needs more practical books on structure and plotting and this will be the guidebook that you need.

About the Author
Milovan Djilas (1911-1995), dissident Yugoslav Communist leader and writer, born in Polja, Montenegro. He studied law at the University of Belgrade, where he embraced Marxism, and was subsequently imprisoned for political activities. He became a good friend of Tito and by 1940 was a member of the Politburo of the Yugoslav Communist Party. Fighting with Tito's partisans during World War II, he held numerous high posts in the postwar government and was a leading supporter of Tito's break with the USSR in 1948. By 1953 he was vice president under Tito and widely believed to be his chosen successor. Djilas's criticism of Communist rule, however, led to his loss of all positions and his expulsion from the party in 1954. He was imprisoned in 1956. Upon publication in the West of his The New Class (1957), an expos� of the Communist hierarchy, his sentence was extended. His Conversations with Stalin (1962) cost him another four years in jail. Finally released in 1966, he continued to write and publish. Among his other books are Land Without Justice (1958), and Rise and Fall (1983; trans. 1985), an account of his own government career. The New Class was published in Yugoslavia in 1990.

A Yugoslav Socialist Meets Stalin and Loses His Faith

Milovan Djilas was one of four senior members of Tito's government until his expulsion from the Yugoslav Communist party in 1954 and eventual imprisonment on political charges. He wrote "Conversations With Stalin" in 1961, between arrests. The book is a diary of Djilas' three voyages to Moscow in 1943, 44, and 48. Djilas, his memories no doubt leavened by hindsight, titles the three meetings "Raptures", "Doubts", and "Disappointments", and as these names indicate, the book chronicles his growing disillusionment with Soviet-led socialism.
Djilas was an educated man, a sophisticated thinker and a writer. So that when we read passages in the "Raptures" section such as, "My entire being quivered from the joyous anticipation of an imminent encounter with the Soviet Union", it seems clear that he was not the na�f that he makes himself out to be. Rather, given his circumstances at the time that he was writing, he was heightening the sense of his early fascination with all things Soviet so that his later disenchantment is all the more palpable.
The book fascinates with its detail. Djilas travels to Moscow as a foreign dignitary to discuss Yugoslav-Soviet policies. He must cool his heels for days before he is finally summoned to meet Stalin, and then the meetings are typically all night dinners with copious drinking and byzantine political subtext to the conversation. Stalin dominates the discussion so thoroughly that when he insists that the Netherlands was not a member of the Benelux union, nobody dares correct him. Djilas recognizes traits of greatness in Stalin, his ruthlessness and far-sightedness. He describes these not out of regard or respect, but because they are precisely the qualities which make Stalin evil. "Every crime was possible to Stalin, for there was not one he had not committed."
As doubts begin to creep in for Djilas, he records the development of his own cynicism. "In politics, more than in anything else, the beginning of everything lies in moral indignation and in doubt of the good intentions of others". His portraits of Krushchev, open-minded and clever; of Molotov, Stalin's taciturn lieutenant; Dimitrov, the powerful Bulgarian kept on Stalin's string; Beria, sinister and drunk; and a host of other prominent figures make this book required reading for those interested in the era. The descriptions of machinations surrounding Yugoslav-Albanian-Bulgarian politics and his unflattering characterization of Croatian hero Andrija Hebrang are of great interest to students of Balkan history.

From idealogy to reality

Although I read this as a requirement for one of my classes this semester (East Europe Since 1918), I found it genuinely interesting, enough that I began and finished it in the same day. Djilas was one of the top communists of Yugoslavia, and was part of the first communist foreign missions to the Soviet Union. His book treads from the opening euphoria of the promise of socialism and its new expression, including the near-worship of its manifest leader, Stalin. Then doubts begin to creep in as he is horrified by the actions of the Red Army in his homeland and the relationship that the Soviets--communist comrades--wish to compel upon the Yugoslavs. Quickly this moves to deep disappointment as he realizes that for all their propaganda, the Soviets are truly just a different embodiment of Imperialistic Russia and that the more things have changed, the more they have actually remained the same. His personal insights into the character of the Soviet leaders lend this book a feeling of pathos that goes far beyond its historicity. Here, Stalin is seen as the man that he was, and his monstrosity is only magnified under that understanding.

An idealist becomes pragmatic.

What happens when a young idealist has to deal with the Soviet system in his relations as a foreign representative. Djilas was a Yugoslav guerrilla who was chosen as a representative to the Soviet Union. In this series of meetings over a period of six years, his idealism is washed away and he becomes more pragmatic on the Communist system. Not only does he see Stalin for what he is, but he becomes cynical of the whole system.

This is an interesting and quick read. One understands why Yugoslavia broke away from the Soviet orbit. It also shows Yugoslavia wanting to make Albania a part of its country. We now know what that would have caused. This shows an interesting perspective on the different perspectives each East European Communist government had. This book is slighty dated.

beautiful traditional deck

I love this deck! It's my first tarot deck and I couldn't be happier. The printing quality is fantastic, the images are clear and the colors harmonious. The backsides are very elegant and a very calming color that unifies the deck. The paper quality is also very nice, I feel like I will be using these for a long while. I'm glad this was the first deck I chose because the symbolism is very easy to recognize. The tin is also great, it snaps together cleanly and securely and protects the cards.

My only criticism is with the information booklet--the instructions for the celtic cross are very confusing and inconclusive compared to the methods of my friends and tutorials I looked at online. I suggest you do your own research on spreads and the card meanings, as the booklet is tiny, confusing, and vague. It can lead to some pretty misleading interpretations. But this definitely does not take away from the beauty and quality of the cards!

About the Author

Dominique Guinard is the CTO and co-founder of EVRYTHNG, a large-scale Web of Things cloud making products smart by connecting them the Web. Dom Guinard got his Ph.D. from ETH Zurich, where he worked on the early concepts of the Web of Things architecture: an open application layer for the Internet of Things. Recently Dom joined the Web of Things Interest Group at W3C with EVRYTHNG as a founding member organization.

Vlad Trifa is co-founder and head of R&D at EVRYTHNG - a new Internet software company providing online profiles, or "Active Digital Identities," for any physical object. He completed his PhD at the Institute for Pervasive Computing at ETH Zurich working on the Web of Things and real-time data sharing, collection, and processing using Web technologies.

I first read this book in June 2002 when I met with the author for lunch in Vancouver, B.C.
I started reading it and couldn't put it down. Anthony asked me what I thought of his book, and my reply was, "How much?" I bought numerous copies for my friends.

Now I see that it is available at a much better price through Amazon for Kindle Reader. So, I bought another copy for a friend in California. He loves the book and told me he couldn't stop reading it either.

My favourite chapter is Chapter Seven "The Mind as Creator." ... "You can choose which concepts to plant in your mind as easily as a gardener chooses which seeds to plant in his garden. A gardener can transform any piece of ground into a botanical masterpiece. You can transform your life the same way."

James Allen "As a Man Thinketh"(1900) wrote, "We think in secret and it comes to pass. Environment is but a looking glass." Anthony Hamilton's book is as much a classic as James Allen's.

By far the VERY BEST book I have EVER read on the subject

Since the release of The Secret I have been trying oh-so-hard to get my mind under control and do what other books on Law of Attraction advise i.e "Just Believe" "Say Affirmations" "Be Grateful" etc. But it is only Anthony Hamilton who actually tells you HOW to do that. My kindle version of of the book has so many highlights it has become kind of pointless to make any more! He explains so clearly about why you think negative thoughts, and then talks about HOW to get rid of them - and not just by carpet-bombing your mind with positive affirmations. Only when truly understanding how your internal 'models of reality' (which are mostly false) affect how 'external reality' can you go ahead and change your circumstances. Every few paragraph you will find wonderful pearls of wisdom make you stop and go 'Why couldn't I see that before?!".

Why isn't this man as famous as Tony Robbins???

Fascinating topic, extremely well-written ... in a word, Brilliant!!

I've read a lot of this type of material, but Mr. Hamilton has a wonderful gift for explaining complex principles so that they're easily understandable. His brilliant use of analogies in particular, really help to make what could be considered dense subject matter, easily comprehensible. I'd been hoping to find a modern author along the lines of Neville Goddard and I've always been fascinated with the topic of time travel, feeling intuitively that it must have some kind of practical use in navigating through life. Finished the book in 3 days -- now, I'm on to the exercises ... very exciting!

After the fall of its authoritarian regime in 1998, Indonesia pursued an unusual course of democratization. It was insider-dominated and gradualist, and it involved free elections before a lengthy process of constitutional reform. At the end of the process, Indonesia's amended constitution was essentially a new and thoroughly democratic document. By proceeding as they did, the Indonesians averted the conflict that would have arisen between adherents of the old constitution and proponents of radical, immediate reform. Gradual reform also made possible the adoption of institutions that preserved pluralism and pushed politics toward the center. The resulting democracy has a number of prominent flaws, largely attributable to the process chosen, but is a better outcome than the most likely alternatives. Donald L. Horowitz documents the decisions that gave rise to this distinctive constitutional process. He then traces the effects of the new institutions on Indonesian politics and discusses their shortcomings as well as their achievements in steering Indonesia away from the dangers of polarization and violence, all the while placing the Indonesian story in the context of comparative experience with constitutional design and intergroup conflict.

About the Author
Donald L. Horowitz is the James B. Duke Professor of Law and Political Science at Duke University. He is the author of The Courts and Social Policy (1977), winner of the Louis Brownlow Award of the National Academy of Public Administration; The Jurocracy (1977), a book about government lawyers; Coup Theories and Officers' Motives: Sri Lanka in Comparative Perspective (1980); Ethnic Groups in Conflict (1985, 2000); A Democratic South Africa? Constitutional Engineering in a Divided Society (1991), winner of the Ralph Bunche Award of the American Political Science Association; and The Deadly Ethnic Riot (2001). Horowitz has been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School and the Central European University as well as a visiting fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge, at the Law Faculty of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. In 2001, he was Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and in 2001-2002, he was a Carnegie Scholar. In 2009, he was presented with the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Ethnicity, Nationalism and Migration Section of the International Studies Association. Horowitz is currently writing a book about constitutional design, particularly for divided societies, a subject on which he has advised in a number of countries. In 2011, Horowitz was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Flemish-speaking Free University of Brussels.

But like many mainstream political scientists who work on Indonesia Horowitz ...

There is a wealth of information in this book on the politics of constitutional change in Indonesia. As such it is a valuable reference. But like many mainstream political scientists who work on Indonesia Horowitz is not sufficiently critical of political outcomes post-Suharto. It is difficult to square this rosy picture with Indonesia's dysfunctional politics. His line, like many of his colleagues, is that it could be much worse. Yes, of course. This is very reminiscent of the praise that political scientists lavished on Suharto, that is, until he fell from power.
