All pet rat owners need this booklet
By W Rogers
This booklet is a must for pet rat owners. The information on diseases, medications, nursing care and first aid is crucial. There is a steep learning curve for new rat owners, and this book has been a godsend to me. Many vets don't know much about rats, and they are glad to have the suggested dosages. Some people get a spare copy to leave with their vet.

I was pleased to see a downloadable version available. I have a hard copy at home as well as electronic copies on my phone and tablet.

The only thing wrong with the booklet is a misleading page about home euthanasia. Instronglybdisagree with it. This really should be removed from the book; I have it on good authority that there is no reliable method of home euthanasia!

If you disregard that section, you will find a wealth of practical information to guide you in the care of your pet rats.

From Publishers Weekly
If the author of The Ipcress File is not at the very top of his form here, he nevertheless produces an absorbing and well-crafted WW II thriller. In January 1942, infamous Gen. Erwin Rommel is making a seemingly unstoppable march on Cairo, the "city of gold." Former Glasgow police detective Bert Cutler, now an Army captain, has been charged to uncover the spy who is feeding the Desert Fox information enabling him to thwart all British strategies. En route to his new post, Cutler escorts fellow Scotsman Jimmy Ross, accused of murder, to the military prison in Cairo. When Cutler dies of a heart attack in their private train compartment, Ross assumes his identity. Readers might expect that Ross's efforts to carry off the impersonation and capture Rommel's agent will be the focus of this 24th offering from an acknowledged master of espionage fiction, yet Ross is only one member of an intriguing ensemble cast, which includes a society girl turned undercover agent, a British deserter heading up a band of renegades, an exiled Russian prince and King Farouk himself. Story lines concern not just the war but also black-market activities and the efforts of Jewish operatives to arm themselves for the anticipated battle for a homeland. Directing his varied characters and juggling his many subplots, Deighton demonstrates enviable legerdemain. Literary Guild main selection.

From Kirkus Reviews
Abandoning present-day intrigues (MAMista, Spy Sinker, etc.), Deighton journeys back to WW II (SS-GB and XPD)--and a terrific return it is: a rich drama of heroes and villains awaiting German General Erwin Rommel's attack on Cairo--the ``city of gold.'' The plots here are many, but central among them is the attempt by Special Investigation Branch Major Bert Cutler to unmask the spy who's been leaking British secrets to Rommel. The kicker is that Cutler isn't Cutler; he's really Jimmy Ross, a British corporal who was on his way to Cairo to be court-martialed for killing an officer when his escort, Cutler, keeled over from a heart attack. Quick-thinking Ross switched IDs with Cutler and now finds himself in Cairo with an office, full staff, and carte blanche to turn the city upside down in pursuit of the spy--that is, if he doesn't betray himself first to any of the marvelously realized characters who crowd the pages here, from his leathery assistant to a manipulative Jewish nationalist, a White Russian prince, two young and beautiful Englishwomen, an upper-class British deserter turned grand thief, a too-caricatured American reporter (all tough pose and cocky action), and King Farouk himself--fat, decadent, imperious. It's the deserter who--by committing a murder that Ross must investigate--turns out to be Ross's main foil; and it's he who pulls the narrative--the first half of which springs forward mostly on perfectly pitched dialogue--into the desert and shattering action as Rommel attacks an armored caravan carrying Ross and several others, precipitating a crisis that movingly strips these men, good and evil, down to their bare selves. At one point, Ross is likened to Bogart--appropriate in a novel so reminiscent in spirit to Casablanca. And if this is the same old story, a song of love and glory, at least it's told here with consummate skill. Play it again, Len. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

One of Deighton's lesser known, but better stories
By Terrapin Thunder
This seems to be one of the lesser-known Deighton novels, but I have read it twice and I think this is both one of his best novels AND one of the best WW2 novels ever written. That praise may seem over the top, but this story is really, really good. Deighton puts a great twist of the story of Rommel's spy and he is a superb writer anyways. Well worth reading.

Predictably good Deighton novel.

Gives a great flavor of WW2 Cairo. Good story line. Interesting and well-developed characters although the ending was a little abrupt.

A Different Len Deighton
By Loren D. Morrison
CITY OF GOLD is a different kind of Len Deighton book. There is no cold war Berlin here. No Bernard Sampson risking his life to make one more dangerous border crossing. No Fiona, the non-traitor traitor, nor any of the rest of Deighton's usual cast of spies, counter spies, and stay-at-homes. Deighton, to his credit, has tried something different here.
Far from the cold war in both time and place, we find ourselves in 1942 Cairo in the presence of one Bert Cutler who isn't Bert Cutler at all. He is really Jimmy Ross who doesn't want to be Bert Cutler but can't afford to be Jimmy Ross. We first meet Ross on a train on the way to Cairo in the Custody of Cutler. Ross is being taken to Cairo to be tried for murder when Cutler suffers a fatal heart attack. The quick thinking Ross manages to switch identities with the deceased and shortly finds himself in Cairo charged with finding the identity of a spy who is leaking information on British troop movements to Rommel, the Chief of the German Tank Corps. Ross doesn't want to stay Cutler. He doesn't want to hunt for a spy. All he wants to do is to escape before his true identity is discovered. An escape opportunity never presents itself.
This is not a spy story. It is, however, a pretty good adventure set in Cairo and the surrounding desert. As Cutler, Ross's life is further complicated by the murder of a British soldier that he is expected to investigate. In investigating this murder, he runs across a group of "special assignment" British Soldiers who aren't really soldiers at all, but armed marauders who steal British Munitions and sell them to the highest bidder. To further complicate matters, the second in command of this group isn't even British. He's really German, but none of the other members of his "Unit" have been able to figure that out. In the final analysis, this man is the key to solving both mysteries, the intelligence leak and the murder.
Ross, along with some real British Soldiers and the profiteering phonies are all caught in the desert in a major raid by Rommel. All but Ross die, but not before he has solved both questions. In the aftermath, Ross, whose true identity is discovered. is set free and never tried on the murder charge against him, but to get the answer to the key question: who was leaking the strategic information, I'm afraid that you will have to read CITY OF GOLD. That is what this review is about isn't it?

Sam Langford: Boxing's Greatest Uncrowned Champion, by Clay Moyle

A compelling and thorough biography of the great Sam Langford.
Standing no more than 5’ 7” tall, Sam Langford was one of the 20th century’s greatest fighters. In 1951, the great featherweight champion Abe Attell was asked if Sugar Ray Robinson was the best of all time, either as a welterweight or middleweight. He named Stanley Ketchel as the greatest welterweight he’d ever seen and said that, as for the middleweights, he’d take Sam Langford, “the greatest of them all at that poundage.”
Remarkably, the man Attell felt was the greatest middleweight fighter in history fought and defeated many of the leading heavyweight contenders of his day. Over time, he matured physically and grew into a light heavyweight, then began fighting heavyweights on a regular basis, but he was almost always the much smaller of the two combatants.
Nat Fleischer, founding editor of The Ring magazine, called Sam one of the hardest punchers of all time, and ranked the little man seventh among his personal all-time favorites “Sam was endowed with everything. He possessed strength, agility, cleverness, hitting power, a good thinking cap, and an abundance of courage He feared no one. But he had the fatal gift of being too good, and that’s why he often had to give away weight in early days and make agreements with opponents. Many of those who agreed to fight him, especially of his own race, wanted an assurance that he would be merciful or insisted on a bout of not more than six rounds.”
Other leading sportswriters of that era had even higher opinions of Sam. Hype Igoe, well known boxing writer for the New York Journal, proclaimed Sam the greatest fighter, pound-for-pound, who ever lived. Joe Williams, respected sports columnist of the New York World Telegram wrote that Langford was probably the best the ring ever saw, and the great Grantland Rice described Sam as “about the best fighting man I’ve ever watched.”
At the time of Sam’s induction into the Boxing Hall of Fame (October 1955) he was the only non-champion accorded the honor. Many ring experts considered Sam the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the history of boxing Under different circumstances he might have been a champion at five different weights: lightweight; welterweight, middleweight; light heavyweight; and heavyweight.
Blind and penniless at the end of his life, Sam lived quietly in a private nursing home But when one visitor expressed sympathy for his circumstances, Sam replied, “Don’t nobody need to feel sorry for old Sam. I had plenty of good times. I been all over the world. I fought maybe 600 fights, and every one was a pleasure!”
With 98 photographs and illustrations, primarily from private collections.

Review
Sixty-four years ago, a blind and indigent Sam Langford was rediscovered through an award winning article published in the New York Herald Tribune. Now, in 2008, Clay Moyle 'discovers' Langford anew-in greater depth and with remarkable clarity. In tenaciously applying the forensic skills of a seasoned sports historian and archivist, Moyle plots a stunning tale which is set against the backdrop of the pervasive racial mores of the times in which Langford lived and fought, and in the process reclaims for posterity the life and career of one of boxing's truly great figures. ---Adeyinka Makinde, author of Dick Tiger:The Life and Times of a Boxing Immortal

As the title of this book indicates, Sam Langford was, indeed, an 'uncrowned champion'-one of the greatest pound-for-pound pugilists ever to step through the ropes. The only reason Langford never held a world title was that no champion gave him a chance to fight for the crown, even though Sam was eminently qualified. Now, the uncrowned champion has found a champion in Clay Moyle, an eminent boxing historian. This book gives Langford the recognition he has deserved for such a long time. Langford was small in stature, but he was larger than life. He was capable of knocking opponents twice his size colder than a mackerel. Had there been any justice in the world of the early 1900s, Langford would have been champion of the middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. Moyle s epic chronicle of Langford s life in and out of the ring redresses the fighter s slide into obscurity during the half-century since his death. The author deftly balances the triumphs and tragedies of this extraordinary man s career. This book is a must-read, from the opening bell to the last. --Charles R. Saunders, author of Sweat and Soul: The Saga of Black Boxers from the Halifax Forum to Ceasars Palace

With his richly detailed new biography, Clay Moyle has restored the indomitable Sam Langford to his rightful place in the history of American sports -- and demonstrates along the way that Jack Johnson was right when he called Langford 'the toughest little son of a bitch that ever lived. --Geoffrey C. Ward, author of Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson

About the Author
Clay Moyle is a member of the International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO), created in 1982 for the purpose of establishing an accurate history of boxing and compiling complete and accurate boxing records. He is also a passionate collector of boxing books with over 3,000 titles in his personal collection, many dating back to the 1800's. He lives in Edgewood, Washington.

As Good As It Gets
By feedthecat
Clay Moyle's book is a superb example as to how to write a boxer's biography. Providing many hitherto unpublished - if not unknown - facts about the life and career of the "Boston Tar Baby" (b. 1883, d. 1956, fought professionally from 1902 to 1926, in prime around 1908 to 1912, started losing sight in 1917) and many of his opponents (for example, Moyle explains what became of the long-forgotten boxer Danny Duane, who easily defeated both the young Langford and the highly-skilled Jack Blackburn, yet gave up what would seem to have been a very promising boxing career), the author sprinkles his book with many interesting, oftentimes funny, anecdotes about his subject. Of course, the best aspects of this book for boxing fans are Moyle's descriptions of Langford's boxing style and abilities (including accounts of when and against whom he started to utilize certain tactics and techniques); his accounts of Langford's major bouts - sometimes seemingly providing a 'blow-by-blow' description of the action; the many cited opinions of Langford's opponents and other boxing experts as to his strengths and weaknesses, as well as where he stands among boxing's greats; and, of course, the many fine photographs of the great man and his peers, many of which have never been published before.

My only real complaint about this book is that the author did not provide Langford's official weigh-in weight (and that of his opponent) for more of his bouts (for most fighters, this wouldn't be that big a deal, but, with someone like Langford, who gradually grew from a lightweight into a heavyweight and was competitive in each of the weight divisions between those two classes, it's quite important to know, especially since he often took on fighters who substantially outweighed him). But that's a small quibble given how great this bio is (I hope that the upcoming biographies of Joe Gans and Harry Greb are even 80% as good as this one).

Moyle provides Langford's ring record at the end of the book, as well as an index (which is always handy). As for the chapter titles, they are as follows: 1) Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia (in Canada - it's Langford's birthplace); 2) Champion of Cambridge Street (in Boston); 3) Joe Gans, "The Old Master"; 4) Joe Walcott, "The Barbados Demon"; 5) Tackling the Big Fellows; 6) England; 7) A Black Heavyweight Champion; 8) The Iron Man (William Hague); 9) Chasing the Michigan Assassin (Stanley Ketchel); 10) Encounter With a Razor; 11) Ketchel; 12) The Fight of the Century (Jack Johnson vs Jim Jeffries); 13) The Joplin Ghost (Jeff Clarke); 14) The Rabbit Punch; 15) Australia; 16) Mastering (Sam) McVea; 17) Troubles Down Under; 18) "Gunboat" (Ed Smith); 19) An End to Heavyweight Title Hopes; 20) Passing of the Torch; 21) Heavyweight Champion of Mexico; 22) Retirement; 23) The Forgotten Man.

Forgotten Greatness
By Pugwash
Sam Langford is typically not on the list of modern boxing historians top ten, or even top twenty-five, but this is their oversight. Sam Langford was a pioneering trailblazer in a young sport.

Clay Moyle is one of many authors revisiting great warriors of the early days of boxing. Recent biographies have been written about Bob Fitzsimmons, Joe Gans and John L Sullivan to name a few.

This tome reads quickly, is highly entertaining and highly informative.

Sam Langford is portrayed as not only a fierce competitor, but also an intelligent, quick-witted and generous man. He had a huge following, but because of the times he fought in, was avoided by the serious contenders and Champions of his day. Although smaller of stature, and lighter than most of the men he fought, he had so much talent that he found ways to break these men down.

Although he lived his advancing years blind and penniless, he refused to give in to bitterness. While he could have fought fighters like Jack Dempsey, Jess Willard and Luis Firpo in big money fights, he had to content himself with fighting the great colored fighters like Sam McVey and Joe Jeannette again and again.

Interestingly, he often carried these fighters through many rounds, because he knew he would have to fight them again, and he wanted to keep interest up for a potential larger gate.

Reading about Langford's life and times opens up new vistas about what it meant to be a black athlete in the early 20th century, and how important a strong mental outlook is in life.

What's your sign?
By The Good Fairy
I am a huge fan the bible series and I love this addition to my collection. There is so much more to Chinese astrology than what year you were born, as the author explains in detail. He does his best to take a very complicated subject and make it as simple as possible for the every day person. My only real problem with this text is that the author shows obvious disdain for all other forms of astrology. Preferring the western system myself, I can't help but find it annoying when in the middle of a chapter he injects his own personal opinion on a completely unrelated subject. But, for those of you who want to learn, this is a great starting point.

great book for a beginner
By nevadagirl1970
This is a great book for a beginner. It helps by giving some general knowledge of Chinese zodiac first and then breaks it down step by step. it is somewhat complicated to do the first time ( you need lots of paper and a pencil but if you carefully follow the instructions you will be able to complete your entire horoscope.

Really good. Best little book ever!
By Kathleen
Most comprehensive, brief, but detailed book I've read! It reviews each animal sign, then goes deeper in terms of "companions" and relationships. I liked that. It guides the reader through every birth year and element. Also, it includes the poetic name and meaning of each sign by year. More depth in this little 'bible' than larger, more verbose books I've read.

Excellent Review Book!!
By Book Smart
This was a terrific CT review. Easy to understand, concise, the images were very high quality and clearly labeled (I did notice the minor errors in labeling that the other reviewer noted- it resulted from using the same label key on two different images, on the first image #12 pointed to the right kidney, however, on the second image it pointed to the left--but really, would that confuse anybody? I'm guessing that most people can figure out which kidney is which.) I did not find any other errors (and I read the whole book, plus answered all the test questions). The practice exams were particularly nice. There is one in the book, but even better is the online exam. You sign into the publisher's website where they have an "exam simulator"--it's great! It automatically grades your exam (way better than having to flip to the back of the book to find the answers)and if you get any questions wrong, it provides a short explanation for the correct answer. This Exam Review book was great for just that (to review before taking the ARRT exam), but if you want more in-depth coverage of the topics you should also get the companion book from the same author. Both of the texts are great.

The place to start your CT prep work..you WILL need additional resources to get ready for the ARRT CT test...but this is a great place to start.
The book is well organized and presents in review format making it easier to navigate the myriad of material needed to pass the ARRT CT test.

an excellent reference
By Marcia K. Potocny
I found this book to be an excellent reference for CT exam prep. The author has a knack for making the most complicated subject easy to understand. I did notice the 2 errors the other reviewer noted but I don't think 2 mistakes negate the value of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing to take the CT exam.

Useless for deep understanding, not good for beginners either
By Dmitri Kozlov
The book describes few concepts. A beginner would expect to see a bigger picture rather than a seemingly random set of methods or models. A professional would look for detailed explanation of concepts. The book provides neither. Descriptions are shallow, formulas contain errors, pseudo code is often wrong. Some description would better be replaced with concise and clear formulas, some formulas require explanations. The book needs a proof editing. However, the bigger problem is how the author presents the material.
I'd recommend a much better book to start with: "Neural Networks and Deep Learning" by Michael Nielsen.

I ran through the book quickly (kindle) and it seems good although I expected much more mathematics involved (Integrals, derivatives, linear algebra). I hope that a new version or a new book will go more in depth with the actual problems...

No-buy for a beginner and not useful for a professional
By Grace
The book is more like a quick compilation of a college student's note. Concepts are presented in a relatively isolated manner; connections between concepts are, for the large part, missing. Furthermore, if the materials presented are rather shallow like in this book, readers will expect to see a strong emphasis on, or hands on exercises of, practical applications. But this book doesn't seem to help much in that regard either, despite what the book claims. The book does give introduction to a bunch of models, which can be useful for a beginner. But at least this edition I wouldn't suggest any one to buy because of poor editing. For example, the pseudo code fragments listed in the book are often wrong, or different than what is described by the text. References to formulas, etc need some proof reading, too.

Review

"The contributions are all of a high quality, asking searching questions of the available evidence."--Foreign Affairs

"Gambetta brings together a remarkable group of academics from different disciplines and countries who bring a formidable array of research and analysis to their attempt to make sense of suicide missions. This is an important book, and the best treatment of the subject I've read."--Louise Richardson, Financial Times

"Making Sense of Suicide Missions is an enlightening collection of essays, so badly needed in the prevalent mood of misconceptions and half-baked analysis."--The Guardian

"... in a fascinating contribution to the new essay collection Making Sense of Suicide Missions, the Yale political scientist Stathis Kalyvas and a Spanish colleague, Ignacio Sanchez Cuenca, point out that FARC, the Columbian rebel group, once hatched a plan to fly a plane into that country's presidential palace but could find no willing pilot, even after dangling an offer of $2 million for the pilot's family."--Boston Globe

"This thoughtful and engrossing book underlines the pointlessness of a rage that is truly self-destructive, even if we may have to continue looking warily on the Tube for a while."--The Evening Standard

"A stunning essay on al-Qaeda and 11 September 2001 ...challenging and timely book."--New Statesman

"The book effectively balances qualitative, quantitative, and analytic approaches. The case studies are deeply researched, riveting, and compelling. And each is shaped to engage the basic question: Why? To the degree that is possible, the attempts to answer this question are based on rigorous forms of inference and reasoning. The book is therefore a joy to teach from. It should claim the attention of both academics and policy makers."--Robert H. Bates, Eaton Professor of the Science of Government, Harvard University

'Making Sense' Of We Are Up Against
By Joseph T. Rodolico
This volume of collected edited works looks deeply in the psyche and motivation of suicide bombers. It is loaded with many surprises, because of its plethora of information and insights about, not only, those on present day suicide missions, but others who have made the pages of history as well.
One featured study reveals that suicide bombers (SB) were far from uneducated, poverty-stricken castaways of the lower class, but rather middle class "normal" members of society, very well-behaved and deeply religious. Although, we assume that SBs are seriously, psychologically, disturbed people, we discover that these are the very types of individuals rejected for suicide missions. Why? They might screw things up or get caught, expose the organization and invite retaliation. When you think about the coolness of the 911 attackers, this makes sense and is very, very frightening. SB's are not motivated by the desire for death, but life; for they seek to live in Paradise.
SBs far reaching motives are also explained: the instantaneous absolution of sins for themselves and possibly their families, 72 houris (none of which they may enjoy while they are alive), and revenge for a feeling of humiliation from the modern world (names withheld). Their willingness to commit murder is organizational in nature, i.e., as members of an army, and not from `a proclivity to die.' The flawed religious thinking of the suicide bomber is exposed too, when they falsely assert that killing one's self in battle is a proper Islamic religious ideal. On the contrary, killing enemies in battle is Jihad, not killing yourself, an idea which originated in the 20th Century. Why would God go to all the trouble of making you fit for eternal life, cleansing you in body and soul, and then ask you to blow yourself into nasty little pieces?
Sleeplessness and the endless repetition of texts and prayers are given as methods for deadening the senses of SBs, and as training to facilitate their departure from this world. This book is a real eye-opener and should be read to rouse those who slumber in complacency.

Boston Bombings got me thinking about this book
By Heather N Lord
A friend got me thinking about where/if the Boston bombings fit in the historical and cultural trajectory of suicide missions. Although we may not yet know enough about the Boston incident to categorize it as a suicide mission, I recommended this book to my social networks because it is an incredible collection of deeply careful, interesting essays. It was one of the best books I read in grad school (public policy masters program). Although it is self-admittedly not a comprehensive taxonomy of all suicide missions in all contexts, the essays rely heavily on empirical evidence to frame important and sometimes unexpected questions. The work also serves the interested reader by offering exquisitely precise thinking on suicide missions (in both heroic and nefarious contexts), and also by being historically and culturally comparative (addressing Kamikaze, Tamil Tigers, Palestineans, Al-Qaeda, 9/11, self immolations with intent to kill others, etc). Really spectacular read for anyone trying to understand suicide missions which, tragically, are becoming an ever more relevant topic around the world.

Terrific collection on suicide missions
By Soft Power
Terrific book with excellent materials on non suicide terror and suicide in which one kills only himself to provide the most insightful approach to understanding the phenomenon of suicide terror while explaining the counter factual cases. Possibly one of the best books ever written on terrorism!
