July 1914: Soldiers, Statesmen, and the Coming of the Great War-A Documentary History, by Samuel R. Williamson Jr., Russel Van Wyk

Williamson and Van Wyk's carefully chosen primary documents memoirs, diaries, government documents, newspaper editorials, and other contemporary accounts introduce readers to the civilian and military leaders whose decisions contributed to events that led to World War I. The documents, along with the authors' scholarly, engaging analysis and insights, reveal personal and national conceptions of war and peace, militaristic impulses, and influential contextual factors, including alliance structures, arms races, and mobilization arrangements of the time. Coverage includes all the major powers of the war Austria Hungary, Germany, Russia, Italy, France, England, and Serbia.

The authors' conclusion that individuals, not monolithic governments and impersonal forces, made the decisions in the summer of 1914 that led to the First World War, is worthy of consideration in the current era of global tension and terrorism.

Review
"The Williamson and Van Wyk work is still the best single book to use in the classroom. It reprints the most essential documents and its narrative and analysis is exceptional. Here is an innovative analysis of the outbreak of the war that is far better than other standard texts. I use it, however, because it has something to say to scholars and it is a major interpretation in its own right. The book also has a useful chronology, list of key decision makers, and a bibliographical guide to writing papers." --John A. Vasquez, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (International Studies Review)

"This is an amazing book for teaching crisis diplomacy. Students love the primary documents and analysis that accompanies them. I'm very grateful you got this book back into print." --Andrew P. Owsiak, University of Georgia

"An excellent and valuable text for my course on WWI indispensable and an excellent selection of primary source readings along with the superb introductions to each." --Robert Pontbriand, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth

A Spotlight on Old World Power Politics and Diplomacy - Blowing up the World of 1914:
By John Silence is Golden
The best way to describe this book's format is that it is a condensed, streamlined, edited and updated version {in its format} of Luigi Albertini's monumental 1600 page three {3} volume masterpiece "The Origins of the War of 1914" {see my April and May 2010 reviews} published between 1952 and 1957. By using Professor Albertini's template, the various contributors and authors have culled a wide variety of offical goverment documents, letters, diary entries, contemporary newspaper articles and memoirs written by the monarchs, politicians, generals, decision makers on interested onlookers for all of the Great Powers AND for the "Rogue State" whose criminal actions precipitated the catastrophe - The Kingdom of Serbia.

All these numerous contemporary documents/sources illuminate these "powerbrokers" mindset, prejudices, insight, opinions and their world view as the 1914 crisis unwound. The book is divided into chapters by country - Serbia, Austria - Hungary, Germany, Russia, Italy, France and Great Britain with the authors supplementing these original documents with a preface, detailed information {for each individual country's chapter} that provides an overview for each nations internal/external problems issues and reactions and an epilogue that ties all of these astonishing documents and information together in the context of 21st century hindsight.

These documents assess each countries civilian and military leadership in relation to their reaction to the what their prospective adversaries were doing / saying AND what they actually thought what their true motives were - what they were actually really scheming / planning to perpetrate! Trust of one's neighbors {and your friends!!} was not prevalent in the world of 1914 "Old World Diplomacy"!!

The individual chapters on Serbia, Russia and Italy are particularly interesting in how the official documents provide some insight to their decision - making. The case that is made in the chapter for Britains eventual declaration of war and Sir Edward Grey's management of Britains Foreign policy descisions is {in my opinion} less than edifying and the weakest chapter in this book. Certainly Grey's "tweaking and cheesparing" of the truth in what the British Foreign Office, P.M Asquith and Grey's motivations were in pushing Britain towards war are quite revealing in the official documents that are cited in this chapter.

I purchased this book on the basis of a prievous one written by Samuel R. Williamson - "The Politics of Grand Strategy; Britain and France Prepare for War - 1904 -1914" which I've read and own and despite and its age {the original publication date is 1969} and it is still a revelant and excellent book.

In 2014, the 100th year anniversary of the start of World War 1, there has been an astonishing number of books recently published on its the historical causes/reasons for who bears the most responsibility. "Soldiers, Statesmen and July 1914" would be a worthy addition to anyone's library because the contemporary documents are so well chosen meshing with the various contributing authors insights.

The used copy that I recently purchased on the Amazon Web Site was reasonably priced and of excellent quality. I was impressed with the author's overall / outstanding organization of it information and the high quality and {surprising} depth of it's narrative for a relatively brief book and I give it rating of between 4 and 4 stars - Recommended.

A Country-by Country Summary of the July Crisis
By Gregory J. Miller
I found July 1914, edited by Samuel Williamson and Russel Van Wyk to be an interesting supplement as to James Joll's The Origins of the First World War. July 1914 analyzed the reaction of each of the great powers of Europe, along with Serbia, to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. This book was a combination of primary sources, including letters, state documents, telegrams, and newspaper editorials, along with background information provided by the authors. The book's overall purpose was to analyze what went wrong: why did a seemingly trivial incident escalate into the second worst war in history?

While none of the powers claimed to have wanted a war, they all (with the possible exception of Italy) really did. They just did not want war declared in July 1914. Upon reading the primary sources, it is clear that most of the European leaders wanted the war postponed for a few months or years. Austria-Hungary, Russia, and France were not ready for a war then because most of their soldiers were on leave harvesting their crops. Russia would have preferred to delay the outbreak of the war for two or three years to complete their industrialization and military preparations, but they could not back down to the Central Powers a third time or they feared that they would lose all credibility in the Balkans. France, nervous that she had a population just two-thirds that of Germany, wanted to wait until her eastern ally was ready. Serbia's army was exhausted after fighting the two Balkan Wars. England was dealing with internal issues and faced the threat of rebellion in Ireland. Germany was the only power that sensed that this was the opportune time to fight; they viewed the outbreak of war in July-August 1914 as a pre-emptive strike before Russia was fully prepared.

Williamson and Van Wyk confirmed Joll's thesis that Germany and Austria-Hungary started the war because they knew that things would be much worse on the Eastern Front in a couple of years. Austria-Hungary (ir at least the duo of Leopold Berchtold and Conrad von Hotzendorff also wanted war, hoping that a decisive victory over Serbia would pacify their Slavic subjects. It is important to note that none of the Allied powers seemed to be willing to back off, either.

The authors believed that the lack of civilian control of the military (except in the case of France) was a major cause of the war. Although Serbian Prime Minister Nikola Pasik opposed the assassination, he was unable to prevent Dragutin "Apis" Dimitrijevic from being able to carry it out, let alone fully cooperate with Austria-Hungary because he feared the quasi-governmental Black Hand organization (this is similar to how people question whether Mahmoud Abbas could control Hamas or other Palestinian terrorist organizations even if he wanted to). German Chief of Staff Helmuth von Moltke did not have to answer to the Reichstag. The Russian system discouraged cooperation between the army and civilian authority. After Italy entered the war, the leaders of the army were able to do whatever they wanted to (including squander untold numbers of soldiers before the Caporetto Campaign).

This lack of civilian control proved to be a dangerous situation. The citizens of Europe had little or no say as to whether their country would go to war; while there were briefly some strikes in France after war was declared, most people chose to follow their country's flag. That might not have been the case if the people were consulted earlier in July...they might not have cared if Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in a town that they probably couldn't spell.

Military leaders tend to favor their wars because that is their job. Both Hotzendorf and Moltke favored a quick victorious war to make their people happy...What if the war is neither quick nor victorious? General Vladimir Sukhomlinov of Russia either lied to Foreign Minister Sazanov about the level of preparedness of the army or he himself did not know its exact strength. Henry Wilson wanted a British Expeditionary Force (BEF) on the Continent asap.

The other problem with this lack of civilian control was that once the army started to mobilize, it would be difficult to impossible to stop. Due to the poor communication and transportation systems of the time, it was difficult for any government to control mobilization. This could be seen in Russia's dilemma as to whether it should partially or completely mobilize and whether its frontier with then-neutral Germany should be included. Austria-Hungary faced a similar quandary in regards to Serbia and Russia (made worse by the fact that there was only one railroad line going to Serbia). It would be difficult for any negotiator or leader to control that process.

Reading between the lines, I believe that the July Crisis might have been diffused by an effective international forum. There were too many problems with communication at this time. French President Raymond Poincare missed some key telegrams when he was traveling by boat from Russia. The famous Nicky-Willy telegrams between Czar and Kaiser were frequently delayed and were ineffective in preventing a war). Unfortunately, the Concert of Europe system was obsolete and the Hague was only temporary. Europe needed something more permanent and effective. I am not saying that the world learned its lesson, as both the League of Nations (1919-1939) and the United Nations (1945-present) have proven to be worse than worthless preventing aggression.

Europe was on the brink of war in July 1914. The political animosities from one end of the continent to the other were too great to prevent World War I from occurring. Through better statesmanship and communication, the war could have been prevented for a few months or possibly a few years. If that was the case, then Williamson and Van Wyk would have written a book describing the reactions of a different crisis. The outcome might have been the same or hopefully Europe would have chosen different leaders who might have been able to prevent the horrors were created resulting from World War I and its aftermath.

APIS -- no bull
By John P. Maher
July 1914: Soldiers, Statesmen, and the Coming of the Great War: A Brief Documentary History. Edited by Samuel R. Williamson and Russel Van Wyk. 2003. Bedford / St Martin's Press.

A commonplace in recent books on the Balkans is to draw parallels between 1990s Serbia and the Third Reich. Williamson and Van Wyk confirm the consensus view that that Germany and Austria-Hungary started the Great War, but fail to pursue another parallel.

They say nothing about activities of Germany and Austria in the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. But policy and press in those countries are re-runs of the war hysteria of 1914. Germany and Austria, despite their atrocities in WW I and WW II have deployed troops in "enemy territory" - the Serb lands, after arming, training and diplomatically recognizing secessionists in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo-Metohia. The parallel is identical to the 1914 war to destroy Serbia and annex (1914) or economically dominate (1991- present) this strategic territory.

Williamson and Van Wyk, though they blame the Central Powers for 1914, nevertheless revert to the PR of those powers regarding Serbia 1914 and 1991ff. I quote:
"...murderous colleagues...... the same Serbian military pretensions that drove Apis would ... lead to the virtual Serbian takeover of the Yugoslav government in the 1990s. These moves in turn set in motion the forces that would ultimately see post-World War II Yugoslavia split apart in the 1990s. This dissolution would come in part from the relentless political struggles between another volatile Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, and his Serb military associates. Pasic and Apis would have felt right at home in Belgrade of the 1990s." They adduce not one document in their "documentary history" which would permit the reader to confirm their characterization of "Serbian military pretensions" or the "volatility" of Slobodan Milosevic.

If they are going to interject Milosevic here, it would be consistent to include the man who sent the Yugoslavian federal army to take over the border posts between Italy and Austria and Slovenia (a Yugoslavian federal unit). Slovenian irregulars, in Austrian kit, murdered federal unarmed army recruits, holding hands-up (screened on Austrian TV). The Prime Minister who sent in the army as commander in chief was the Croat Ante Markovic. The President of the federal presidency who published a book "How I destroyed Yugoslavia" was not Slobodan Milosevic, but the Croat opportunist Stijepan Mesic. - His family operated under the name "Tovarish" (Russian for `comrade') in communist days.

Williamson and Van Wyk would also have to mention Alija (Ali) Izetbegovic, the USA's "son of a bitch" (remember LBJ on Somoza?). His "Islamic Declaration" was re-issued in 1990 in Sarajevo. If Williamson and Van Wyk can't, I can provide the documentary evidence of his 1984 sentence for trying to re-establish political Islam in the Balkans. including details of his travels to Vienna, Istanbul and Teheran. - Oh yes, Osama Bin Laden received his Bosnian passport in Vienna. During Bill Clinton's tenure Osama was often in Bosnia. Williamson and Van Wyk could have saved themselves from this morass of incompetence by sticking to things they know. That would, however, take more homework, too.

"Apis" - no bull. Getting back to July 1914, Williamson and Van Wyk are in over their linguistic heads. On page 19 is a purported explanation of the nickname of the head of Serbian military intelligence, Colonel Dragutin Dimitrijevic. "nicknamed for his bull-like appearance". If Williamson and Van Wyk could read Serbian and the Latin required in secondary schools of a century ago, they would have known that the constantly working APIS got his moniker not from Egypt's BULL, but from Rome's busy BEE: Apis mellifica. There's more.

In a footnote (page 41) "Documents on the Foreign Policy of the Kingdom of Serbia", Williamson and Van Wyk leave out a crucial jot or a tittle that changes everything. Not many nouveaux balcanistes seem to know Balkan languages. Williamson and Van Wyk's text has "Dokumenti o spolnoj politici Kraljevine Srbije". There should be a letter "j" between the "l" and the "n" of "spolnih", i.e. it should be "spoljnih"; then it would mean what they say, but what they have printed reads "Sexual Policy of the Kingdom of Serbia".

Collected Poems: 1953-1993, by John Updike

“The idea of verse, of poetry, has always, during forty years spent working primarily in prose, stood at my elbow, as a standing invitation to the highest kind of verbal exercise—the most satisfying, the most archaic, the most elusive of critical control. In hotel rooms and airplanes, on beaches and Sundays, at junctures of personal happiness or its opposite, poetry has comforted me with its hope of permanence, its packaging of flux.”
Thus John Updike writes in introducing his Collected Poems. The earliest poems here date from 1953, when Updike was twenty-one, and the last were written after he turned sixty. Almost all of those published in his five previous collections are included, with some revisions. Arranged in chronological order, the poems constitute, as he says, “the thread backside of my life’s fading tapestry.” An ample set of notes at the back of the book discusses some of the hidden threads, and expatiates upon a number of fine points.
Nature—tenderly intricate, ruthlessly impervious—is a constant and ambiguous presence in these poems, along with the social observation one would expect in a novelist. No occasion is too modest or too daily to excite metaphysical wonder, or to provoke a lyrical ingenuity of language. Yet even the wittiest of the poems are rooted to the ground of experience and fact. “Seven Odes to Seven Natural Processes” attempt to explicate the physical world with a directness seldom attempted in poetry. Several longer poems—“Leaving Church Early,” “Midpoint”—use autobiography to proclaim the basic strangeness of existence.

From Publishers Weekly
This collection gathers more than 300 of Updike's poems, some written in his youth and others very recently. Admirers of his fiction know that verbal precision, edged with wit, is one of Updike's hallmarks, and readers will fall upon his light verse with delighted recognition of its sheer cleverness. As a versifier, Updike knows full well how to use tools for the purposes of play, but he doesn't (usually) overindulge; even in the case of "occasional" poems, he polishes and polishes a passing subject with a certain modesty, until it shimmers: "White Dwarf," written to mark the discovery of "the smallest known star," salutes "A little pill in endless night, / An antidote to cosmic fright." The trouble, though, begins with his sober poetry. For some reason, when he works in this vein, Updike's ear tends to falter, his judgment often errs and the poetry wanders into dangerously trivial territory. This is puzzling, since Updike's sense of rhythm in prose is exceptional, and his perceptions are bound so intimately with those rhythms. Not so here, unfortunately.

From Library Journal
If this collection is any indication, Updike is as prolific a poet as he is a novelist and critic. Nothing--airplane travel, a bug in the sink, a darning egg, a pair of eyeglasses--is too mundane a subject for the many sonnets, odes, and other traditional verse forms that seem to flow effortlessly from his pen. Many of the poems read like limbering-up exercises for the intricately wrought prose of his novels. The greatest weakness here (as in the fiction) is the preciosity and coyness of style, which, thankfully, is relieved by an unerring eye and self-deprecating wit: a pillow is "a bowl of dreams," light switches are "nipples on the walls' flat chests," and July evokes "deep pools of shade beneath dense maples/ the dapples as delicious as lemon drops--/ textures of childhood, and its many flavors!" Perhaps a slender selected poems would have better shown off Updike's gift for light verse than this exhaustive, bricklike volume. Recommended for comprehensive collections of American literature or poetry.

So Very Enjoyable
By JBoswell1740
Whether light verse or more serious, John Updike's poetry is so engaging and accessible. His legacy is rooted in his short stories and the "Rabbit" quartet of novels, but Updike's poetry deserves and repays reading. This is the definitive collection, reasonably priced, attractively arranged. Do give it a try.

Upright Updike
By SUBIR GHOSH
A poem is a poem is a poem, right? Wrong. At least to me poetry is something that comes from within, something that's born perfect, something that doesn't need the craftsman. I know I'll draw a lot of criticism from the school of thought that swears by crafted poetry, but no, that's not my cuppa.
John Updike has always passed this touchstone test of mine, more so in this collection. True, not all pieces in this volume are spontaneous, but thanks to his respect for poetry, he has segregated his poems from his "light verse." In his own words, "In making this collection, I wanted to distinguish my poems from my light verse. My principle of segregation has been that a poem derives from the real (the given, the substantial) world and light verse from the man-made world of information - books, newspapers, words, signs. If a set of lines brought back something to me something I actually saw or felt, it was not light verse. If it took its spark from language and stylized signifiers, it was."
The fact that Updike understands the thick line between poetry and prose in verse, doesn't make his poems and verses any less interesting. In fact, it adds to their character.

Everyman's Poet
By mdbrake@postnet.com
John Updike has accomplished a great deal in his career, but his poetry cuts to the heart of his obessions/teachings/observations on life. What a wonderful collection to behold. He makes one appreciate how poetry can once again speak to the heart as well as the mind. I highly recommend this excellent collection for poetry lovers and non-poetry lovers alike.

A valuable book for any transport researcher
By A Customer
This book provides a thorough analysis in all facets of airport operations and provides the reader with a logistical insight that is unmatched. While the book provides a great overview, it lacks information particularly on air cargo development and facility planning at airports. While the growth in air cargo traffic significantly outpaces passenger growth, air cargo development issues at airports become more significant. Air cargo development issues must be addressed by airport authorities. This book only makes scant reference to this. However, "Airport Operations" is a valuable book to all airport authorities, consultants and transport researchers. No doubt, a very timely piece of information.

A very complete, accurate, and timely explanation of Airport
By klanders@us.oracle.com
This is a great source of information and very clear definitions of many of the key issues relating to Airport Management and Operations. Although written primarily from the European and Asia Pacific Airport and Airline perspectives, the author has worked very hard to include North American issues and examples. As The Airport Industry moves continually towards privatization, these differences will move to the background and be less obvious; and less important. This is a great starting place for the researcher or the occasional affectionato

Very comphrensive to all areas of airport operations
By Vector Y.C. Wong
This book is an excellent text to all airport related personnels. I found it's particularly useful to people working in airport and/or aviation management who want to gain more in-depth understanding to all areas of airport operations. This book can also serve as in-house classroom training text for airline personnel. A highly recommended one!

Review
"A fantastic read!" --Catherine Ponder, world-renowned inspirational author

"As the science of medicine is growing more sophisticated, we're learning that the unseen world around us and within us has great importance to our healing. In this book Lois Enochs gives us examples and tools from her life so we can access this healing power. This information is important as we move towards true healing." --Gladyn McGarey, M.D.,M.D.(H), widely recognized as the mother of holistic medicine

"Having known Lois Enochs for more than twenty years and sharing so many of her experiences, it is a joy for me that she is sharing those experiences with others. I have always felt as if she could write in a way to reach individuals that would give them insights to their own spiritual paths and journeys. It is done." --Karen Fletch, accomplished professional medium

The Power of Living in Unity With Spirit
By Roberta Grimes
Lois Enochs gives us an astonishing story of a life lived in spiritual unity. She is apparently psychically gifted, which can be a curse as well as a blessing: her account of being harassed by what she calls her "Night People" is horrifying, and the way she was able to cure this problem will have you scratching your head for days. Ms. Enochs is a natural writer who will have you eagerly turning pages, so her book almost literally reads itself - you don't realize until you are halfway through that you are witnessing something extraordinary.

The author began her adult life with serious financial limitations. Making barely enough to care for herself and her baby made her turn to the only help she could find: the spiritual energy that we think of as God. Angels began coming into her life - literally! She learned to use the power of her own mind to effect repeated extraordinary outcomes, until by the time she reached middle age she had a wonderful international career. The last chapter of Ms. Enoch's book is a recipe for living in the kind of spiritual harmony that has made her life so richly blessed. In just a few pages she beautifully delivers the ancient keys to a successful life, and with her own life's story fresh in your mind you will find that these truths will deeply resonate. This book is a lot of fun to read, and it offers such wonderful spiritual nourishment that it will linger in your mind. - Roberta Grimes, author of The Fun of Dying: Find Out What Really Happens Next!

The power of belief put into action
By Merrylin
Lois Enochs makes writing look easy. Her fluid style is that of a friend telling you stories -- stories with such a surprising turn of events that you find yourself enthralled. First you agonize for her plight, and then you gasp at the odd coincidences. For awhile you have to wonder, and then you believe. And why not. The author has been a good traveller throughout her life -- observing, taking mental notes and photographs, and then applying her positive outlook to make sense of each leg of the journey. Nothing is too random, nothing too mundane. Everything is important and necessary.

Enochs believes in a Christian God but her faith is broad enough to draw in everyone but the most rigid practitioner. If you take away nothing else from the book remember this gentle admonition: "Go forth and play nice."

An excellent book describing universal energy and manifestation
By Dr. John L. Takeuchi Turner
It has been a long time since a book equal to Florence Scovel Shinn's "The Game of Life and How to Play It", has caught my interest. Lois Enochs' "Miracles Only Come in One Size", is, in my opinion, another great book that teaches about the positive effect of good karmic deeds and positive thinking. Her wisdom about how things work in life is, in my mind, totally in keeping with the experimental evidence of Dr. Benjamin Libet whose early work with evoked brain potentials, now confirmed by functional MRI, demonstrated that we apparently lag behind our conscious awareness by 1/3 of a second. However, he admits to a 1/5 second window of opportunity during which we just may affect that which is already in progress if we are clear in our thinking and on top of the problem. Lois Enochs, through her compelling stories of her experience, self-reliance, and working with universal energy, teaches us how to take advantage of that small moment in time. This book is highly recommended for the spiritual seeker who will see that the Universe is a well-oiled machine and there are no accidents.

- John L. Turner, MD. Author of "Medicine, Miracles and Manifestations."

Good, with a few reservations
By MHimeda
I have a problem with authors who don't care enough about their writing to proof-read it well. These books (I've read the entire series) have been run through a spell-checker, but no more than that. Thus, there is a profusion of extra words, missing words and the wrong words in sentences -- the type of thing a spell-checker won't spot, because there's nothing spelled incorrectly. I read quickly, so I probably noticed it more than a reader that takes a week to read a book, but it got very annoying. That being said, the books themselves were good, the plots interesting, the character development very good. They had to be to keep me reading. I felt the details got a bit over the top in incredulity, and would have packed a better punch if there wasn't quite so many "impossible" things happening all the time, but that's just my own opinion.

I couldn't help but be struck by the similarities between this series and Harry Potter. It's a female version . . . . Tess (Harry) is raised by aurens (muggles), with no idea of her powers, then abruptly finds out about them when she turns 15 or so (11). She is hustled off to the magic school (Hogwarts), where she amazes the teachers with her innate ability. There's even a version of Quidditch, played on airboards instead of broomsticks. Even though Harry Potter seems to be the springboard the author bounced off of, at least he bounced somewhere else with it, making enough of a difference in the events that follow to make one forget the rather striking similarities. The author is good at describing battles, although I don't personally read a book for the battles, and if there are too many of them, I tend to skim through them.

All in all, it's a good series, well written except for the poor editing, which did not improve from book to book. I realize errors like this don't bother a lot of readers, but to me, an author who thinks careful editing is unimportant is like a mathematician who doesn't think basic arithmetic is important.

Amazing story, very engaging
By Brianna
I picked this up when it was listed for free because I really liked the cover. I didn't read the description of it. I just liked the cover. I will say that I have never heard of, or read any of Mr. Hale's previous works so some of the references in this book were kind of over my head at times. However, with that being said, I really thoroughly enjoyed the world he created. At first I was half expecting a few Hogwart's references to come popping out and slapping me in the face (no offense to the author), but once I understood where he was going in his world and the magics involved in it, any similarities to anything else ended.

I don't know if it's because I haven't read any of his previous works or not, but Hawk confused me most of the time. I never really knew if he was the good guy or the bad guy. If he was sane or completely nuts. What his purpose was exactly in the life of Tess, the main character? Near as I could tell he was just some random guy that just showed up, saved her life, had her lie to her parents, took her to world outside of anything she's ever known, and pretty much went "Ok here you go, learn it cause you're important, bye!"

Tess I would have a hard time describing. She does kind of grow on you though. At first she's this typical teenager. Typical teenage problems. Centered in that whole "me" world they tend to get involved in at times. I did love her parents though. Especially the things her father would do whenever she would "get in trouble" at school for standing up for things that were right, even if she did so in a rather aggressive way. Her solid childhood will play an important role later in what she is meant to become. It's endearing how although she behaves like a typical teenager sometimes, she also has that very solid "this is right, this is wrong, this is important, this is not" thought pattern and she doesn't like lying to her parents. I liked that about her. I liked the dynamic of her. Scared, confident, angry, smart, clueless, but also rational.

However, she is not my favorite character. No, that honor goes to her roommate, Iris. I adore Iris. Everything about her is so sweet and loveable! She's charming, she's spastic, she tries so hard to focus, and she is so indescribable sometimes that the only way to describe her is just to go "It's just Iris". As a techno mage, her focus is always on a million things at once. No matter how hard she tries to just be in one place at one time, it's impossible. You can't help but love her. She's brilliant and amazing.

Overall, it is definitely a book series I would recommend. It's a bit fast paced, sometimes you're left wondering how you got from one point to the next, but the important things are always explained. Other things that you wish were explained in more detail aren't (they're probably in the other books I haven't read - like the histories they talk about), but anything pertinent to the ongoing storyline is so you can keep up. There are also a few surprises as well. It's quite an enjoyable read. I can't wait to grab the third one as soon as it comes out.

Liked it despite myself
By MommieJ
Right off the bat I will tell you I don't like heroic teenagers, so I was tempted to put the book down. However, I was drawn into the story and the world the author created within the first chapter. I had a hard time putting the book down and by the end the author actually made me care for and enjoy the teenage heroes.
I think this speaks volumes about the authors talent. When an author can make you enjoy something you normally don't like... bravo to them.
My son is a little young still but I am excited for when I can share this book with him and we can enjoy the adventure together.

Highly recommended! As a lifelong native San Franciscan
By LJ Eisner
Highly recommended! As a lifelong native San Franciscan, most books written about The City disappoint as they typically describe the generic side of modern San Francisco. The real San Francisco is a small town of secret vistas, imaginative surprises, fine artistic sense and creative living. Ms. Petersen's work nails the true character of the city as it's 111 places are those we locals actually seek out to experience- and for some remain the core reasons we're still here. The stunning, the obscure, the joyous, the tiny treasures which we share with our tourist friends, these are the places we celebrate as 'true' San Francisco. Enjoy!

I love love love this book
By fran t.
Wow! I love love love this book...it made me fall in love (again) with this great city. Even though I lived there for years, there are many new places I can't wait to explore. Like "Sex and the City" was about a love affair -- with the city of NY, this book is a love affair with the city of San Francisco. This is not just a book for tourists, local residents should all own a copy!

Great For Locals And Tourisrs Alike
By Ava K
I have lived in San Francisco for eight years and am an avid walker. You would think by now I would have seen it all. I thought so. But this book has proven otherwise. It is full of hidden gem destinations that not even lifers may know about and each destination is accompanied by a succinct description of its importance and significance as well as an artistic photo. The photos are all captioned by the location address, bus routes and a useful "tip". It is a great resource by which to plan a walk and small enough to take along. It's a terrific book.
