David Meyers is a supervisor at Columbus State Community College and is the author of numerous local histories, as well as two musical and other works for the stage. David received his BA from Miami University and his MBA from the Ohio State University. He was featured in an episode of the Discovery Canada/A&E series "Curious and Unusual Deaths."



Elise Meyers Walker is an author and an administrator at the Ohio Board of Regents. She has co-authored six previous books with her father, David, and is frequently called upon to make presentations to various groups. Columbus' Underbelly Laid Bare

After spending forty years of my life in Columbus, this book still managed to surprise and even shock me. Riots, bombings, gambling, prostitution, world-renowned corruption, and even serial "ripper." Yep, at certain times, the heart of Ohio was as black as coal and just as hard. I recommend this volume to anyone who wants to side step the usual tour down memory lane and get right to the nasty stuff.

This page-turner by David Meyers and Elise Meyers Walker turned me on to a whole new genre of reading: non-fiction. Sympathetic yet unsentimental, they transform extensive research into characters who could star in novels and movies.

With newfound braggadocio, this book inspires me to tell friends and neighbors in New Jersey, “My hometown was once like freakin’ ‘Gangs of New York!’” The “Sopranos?” That’s HBO. We had Maurice Patrick Murnan. “House of Cards?” That’s Netflix. We had Harry M. Daugherty. Until reading this book, I thought “Badlands” was just a Bruce Springsteen song.

Thanks to this father-daughter duo, I have a newfound interest in history and sordid appreciation for the can-do attitude of those who helped shape Ohio’s state capital and influence the nation.

Wrapping Your Head Around Eternity

Hicks does an amazing job of taking massive theoretical concepts (like eternity and infinity) and summing them up in ways that everyone can understand. So in this book, readers can really begin to get an idea of what eternity is and what it means for Christians.

I am someone that likes to plan everything. I plan around what has happened, what is happening, and to the best of my knowledge and capabilities, what will happen. When I think of the word eternity, that sends me, a planner, into a tizzy as I try to wrap my brain around something I can't see.

Through the information presented in this book, I was able to see that Eternity is not something to be terrified or uncertain of. In fact, it is something that I can be absolutely confident in. The author presents eternity in a positive, uplifting manner, and utilizes scriptures throughout her entire text to prove her statements as biblically founded.

This brilliant analysis of eternity has opened my eyes and allowed both my love for God and intrigue for theology to be unified. Syed Ali is an associate professor of sociology at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently the co-editor of Contexts Magazine, and is the author of Dubai: Gilded Cage. He is also an Ultimate Frisbee player and a�potter.

Douglas Hartmann (Ph.D. University of California, San Diego, 1997) is Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of Race, Culture, and the Revolt of the Black Athlete: The 1968 Olympic Protests and Their Aftermath (University of Chicago Press, 2003), and co-author of Ethnicity and Race: Making Identities in a Changing World (Pine Forge Press, 2007 with Stephen Cornell). Hartmann’s work has also appeared in the American Sociological Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, the Journal of Sport and Social Issues, and Social Problems, and his comments on sport, race, popular culture, religion, and multiculturalism have been featured in magazines and newspapers around the country as well as on television and radio. In addition, Professor Hartmann is President of the Midwest Sociological Society (MSS), and co-editor and publisher (with Chris Uggen) of the award-winning TheSocietyPages.org. Hartmann is currently working on a book entitled "Midnight Basketball, Race, and Neoliberal Social Policy."

Reading Poetry is a comprehensive, accessible and extremely effective guide to the arts of reading, analysing and enjoying poetry. From the opening chapter, which examines assumptions about what poetry might be, successive chapters map a path that takes the reader from the basics of simple appreciation to an understanding of the often complex theoretical and historical contexts that enrich any appreciation of poetry.

Excellent book

This is absolutely the best textbook available on this subject. It's a big book, and not an easy one, but it offers substantial rewards to anyone who reads it attentively. It worked beautifully for my Introduction to Poetry course, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to become a more proficient reader of poetry.

Recommended Guide to Embracing Teamwork in the Creative Workplace

Teamwork is always a challenge--especially in artistic endeavors. In Designing Together, Brown addresses the central issue of working as a team within the design community and stresses the importance of achieving results and resolving differences. Brown acknowledges that disagreements within creative work are inevitable and actually aren't even unwanted or to be avoided. Instead, he explains how to channel conflicting ideas and focus on the results instead of differences within the team. This book avoids relying on clich�s and instead delivers insights with much clarity. I'm excited to implement ideas from Designing Together to reduce group related stress at my business and harmonize conflict with those I'm working with to better achieve our goals.

Absolutely Stunning Accomplishment

In the last few years, very many UX books have been written that are funny, well written, and helpful. This one still manages to rise above the amazing books that have come out. It's superbly written: absolutely brilliant prose that is amazing to read. Dan Brown has put together information that will likely save countless design teams their sanity, lead them to producing brilliant designs, and learn about themselves as people who can grown and become better. Precisely how he's put together this information is inspiring: well done, Mr. Brown! Seriously: this may be one of the absolute best UX and design books ever released, and it's almost worth buying several copies to hand out to your team.

Great book- surprising truths

This is a great book, and goes a long way to helping to understand the conflict inherent in design. Another review said that this book was analytical and dry which is true- but it is so chock full of practical advice and insights that if it was made more anecdotal it would be 800 pages long. My only problem is that I haven't been able to get through the entire book because I have to set it down every couple pages to digest the simple and kind of mind bowing truths that are extolled. wish this was an audiobook so that I could listen while I multi-task.

A fresh and innovative approach to professional development. This book offers simple strategies for making strategic and successful critical thinking a daily habit.
