Very informative

This volume is not only very comprehensive in its scope, but delivers a compact yet thorough introduction to many areas of linguistics and language research. It is not too difficult for the lay-person to read, yet comprehensive enough to be used for academic purposes. Well structured, well researched, and well written. It is my go-to book of choice when it comes to linguistics. If it cannot answer my quiries, it can usually point me in the right direction and suggest further reading.

Essential reference
By Watching and waiting
Everyone interested in language should own this book. It is wide-ranging, accurate, lucid, engagingly written, well illustrated, and reasonably priced. I will be giving a short Elderhostel-type lecture course on language this fall (I am a retired linguist) and wanted to have the current edition of this book as a backup in case one of the participants asks me a question I can't answer off the top of my head.

Hoped-for update of a classic arrives!

David Crystal, who should be named a national treasure in the UK, has answered the request for an update of this classic. There is no other source that provides a comprehensive look at language in such an accessible way to the interested layperson. Love the detail and visuals...plenty of supporting material in the sidebars to provide interesting places to wander on the way to a better understanding of basic linguistic concepts and the role of language in culture. The text, true to an encyclopedia's form, is dense but Crystal clear.

I really loved how Miranda gives a full plan for each day ...

This book is full of tools for not only understanding but working with all the parts of a woman's cycle. It looks at the ways women’s bodies and how the fluctuations of hormones can effect her mentally, physically and emotionally. It gives you a plan and guide for exploring your own personal cycle, and how that cycle effects you.

I really loved how Miranda gives a full plan for each day on a typical 28 day cycle, but also explains how to adjust it if your cycle is longer or shorter. I felt the plan she gave had a lot of flexibility and that she did a great job of showing how you can not only recognize which optimum time you are in, but also how to adjust the plan if your times didn't follow the breakdown outlined in the book.

This book is one I think would be of benefit to a lot of women who are trying to better handle the hormonal tides of their period (and the rest of the time as well!). It even has a chapter for the men in our lives who may want to learn how to understand us better and help us to live happier and more fulfilled lives through becoming more attuned with the natural workings of our bodies.

This is another great book by author Miranda Gray, which emphasizes how important it is for women to come to understand, accept, and learn to work with their menstrual cycle in order to achieve lasting success and fulfillment in all areas of life. It encourages women to look upon their cycles as a positive part of being female, rather than as the weakness or "curse" that our patriarchal society would have us believe it is.

Frankly, I was surprised by how informative and helpful this book has been. I've been using it for a few months and I really have a better understanding of my cycle and more tools about how to address problems. My husband was pretty grateful for the "demystification" as well.

Don't care if I do die, do die . . .

After reading "A Garden of Sand", I scoured the bookstores looking for more titles by Earl Thompson. Fortunately, I was able to find all four. Unfortunately, Earl died before he could write more. Perhaps, it's fitting that his books (which seem to represent a thinly veiled depiction of his actual life) died with him. I know of few people who could have survived the traumatic and dysfunctional life that Earl's main characters lived.
Caldo Largo was one of the last books that Earl wrote, however, it does not lack the verve and grit that permeate all of his novels. It tells of the life of a shrimp boat owner in Brownsville, Texas in the early 1960's.
Scenes and characters depicted in Caldo Largo seem so real you can almost taste, smell, and feel them. The plot line is nothing that fits any "formula" novel, unless you compare it with other Thompson novels. I could best describe Caldo Largo as a mix between Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath with all the dirty parts left in, lots of fajita flavoring, and a little Shakespearean introspection (or psychosocial character analysis if you will).
I only wish I had kept all my Thompson novels. They're probably worth quite a lot now. I had to throw them out when I got married since my wife insisted they were pornography. But, if you get past all the sex, drugs, and violence, you'll actually appreciate the books finer points like its wonderful descriptive writing, character development, rhythm, and strange sense of truth and justice in pithy human relations.
So for you Shakespeare fans, read it for the deeper themes. For those of you who can't stand the Bard, read it for fun and adventure.

Korean war vet buy a boat and becomes a shrimper in texas...his loves, his struggles, his close encounters of the sexual kind. Kind of a cross between Forrest Gump and To Have Not...but much better then both! Read it and laugh and cry. A book you will recommend but never loan out!

Tsuburarya IS The Master!

If you like giant monster movies, and want to know more about how they were made, this book is for you. Not many photos of the monsters (there are other books out there for that) but there are behind the scenes photos. Learn the biographies of the men who made films you still love after all these years. Not much has been published in the West about them, but here it is! Well written and laid out. 2 page essays about certain film makers by noted Western Kaiju lovers. Worth the price, and thankful that it was printed.
