Shocking, but not surprising

It’s well known that the history of the Catholic Church is rife with tales of corruption and murder — and that internal conflicts roil the Church today over pedophile priests, the role of women, divorce, and gay marriage as well as theology. What’s less well known are the particulars about long-running battles over money and power inside the Vatican, which reportedly forced the resignation of Pope Benedict VI. Corruption may yet eventually induce Pope Francis to follow him into retirement — a line of speculation offered up by Gianluigi Nuzzi, the Italian investigative journalist who has been the focal point for leaks from the Vatican, in his new book, Merchants in the Temple.
Reports of old-fashioned corruption involving money and power have been swirling about the Vatican for decades. Nearly forty years ago there were persistent rumors that the last Italian Pope, John Paul I, who reigned for just 33 days, was murdered when he brought forward a radical reform proposal that would have forced out the greatest beneficiaries of the Vatican’s extensive financial operations. While those rumors were dismissed by most observers, there is extensive proof that the Vatican’s finances were riddled with corrupt influence. In Merchants in the Temple, Nuzzi cites lengthy passages from internal Vatican documents — and even tape recordings of secret meetings involving Pope Francis — to update the tale of ecclesiastical corruption.
Francis emerges from the pages of this book as a hero, though a hero with faults of his own. Unlike his predecessors, who initiated reform measures but failed to follow up on them, Pope Francis has been resolute since the moment of his investiture in 2013. Nuzzi details a series of bold and risky moves by the Pope to bring outsiders, including lay experts, into the Vatican to investigate its financial affairs, and he continued to support them vocally through the ensuing battles over the application of their recommendations. Francis has gone so far as to dismiss a number of Cardinals from their posts, and no wonder. Citing internal documents, Nuzzi describes the astonishing inefficiency, ineptitude, and what can only be called embezzlement that runs rampant through the Church’s finances. What he reveals is shocking: billions of euros intended for the poor are misspent on luxuries for the Vatican hierarchy, funneled to outside vendors and financial institutions through sole-source contracts, or simply unaccounted for. And the Vatican bank has been used extensively for money-laundering.
However, Merchants in the Temple is not easy going for the reader. It appears that the book was written in haste and then poorly translated from the Italian. The chronology becomes confused; the cast of characters is immense and disorienting; and the daunting Byzantine structure of the Vatican is never clearly explained. (That may not be entirely Nuzzi’s fault, however: there are two Vatican banks, not one, and a passel of “commissions” with vague-sounding names that compete with one another for money and power.) Perhaps the old lament, “Don’t shoot the messenger,” should be applied here, because the message comes through clearly: despite the obvious need for radical change, most of the reforms that Francis has proposed remain unrealized as of 2015. “Today the Vatican bank is still impenetrable in many respects, a world unto itself. . . Francis — the great, singular Pope — has to count the number of his friends every day to make sure he will not be left alone.” In many ways, it’s still business as usual in the Vatican.
At this writing Nuzzi and a fellow investigative journalist are on trial in the Vatican, facing eight years in prison, for their pains.

A 21st Century Holy Trinity?

‘Merchants in the Temple’ reveals that since Francis’ election auditors have repeatedly reported to the Holy Father: “There is a complete absence of transparency in the accounts of both the Holy See and the Governorate… costs are running completely out of control…” These pleas have been completely ignored.
This expos� cites a half-dozen priorities repeatedly given by auditors for improvement… Also completely ignored. I will give you a bit of one of them. Not necessarily the most disturbing one. The others are in the book.
“The papacy must take control of the Vatican’s real estate holdings particularly as they pertain to clergy retirement packages….”
In retirement, cardinals enjoy enormous apartments in Rome and in the Vatican regally furnished. Francis has done nothing to mitigate these practices. For example, the month after Francis set the scope of his papacy as “a poor church for the poor,” he moved former Vatican Secretary of State Bertone into a 6,500 sq. ft. penthouse and spent upwards of a half-million dollars redecorating it.
Too, one is not exactly speaking of ‘dire poverty’ when one speaks of the Santa Marta Palace where the Pope occupies the papal suite. With exquisite mahogany floors and marble baths overlooking the Vatican Gardens it has all the amenities of 5 star hotels.
In 1996, John Paul II - fed up with the lack of air conditioning, wiring and plumbing problems and lack of privacy of the centuries-old papal apartment - engaged Pittsburg gambling-boss John Connelly to build Sancta Marthae Palace on the guise it was being built for future conclaves. Construction of the hotel hit a snag when Connelly ran into financial problems and came up with only part of his original commitment. The balance came from the Pittsburg diocese and the poor box. Pittsburg Bishop Wuerl is now Cardinal Wuerl of Washington DC.
Whereas the new palace did provide 106 suites to accommodate conclaves, the plans included provisions for an apartment. Rumors surfaced the Polish Pope was building the opulent hotel for himself. As a result, he never moved and was condemned to bear the foul air, plumbing problems and lack of privacy of the papal apartment for the rest of his life.
Like Francis, many of the ranking cardinals have relocated to the lavish suites in the Sancta Marthae Palace to escape the unbearable hot summers in the aging Apostolic Palace. Though the ‘hotel’ may not be the most regal home in the Vatican, it is by far the most comfortable one.
Nevertheless, the central message of this Vatileaks II expos�: Unless Francis stops trying to be a nice guy to everybody and takes the bull by the horns, we will soon be looking at the resignation of still another pope. If that should happen – and from all this book reveals it is about to happen - three popes would be living in the Vatican – a 21st Century Holy Trinity.

“For too long, in an incredibly facile and superficial manner, millions have been disbursed to pay for unbudgeted jobs that were executed without the required oversight and with ridiculously padded invoices. Many have taken advantage, pocketing even the donations of the faithful, the offerings that were supposed to go to the needy. The Pope then addresses the cardinals who lead dicasteries that over the years have mismanaged Church money, the department heads who haven’t exercised the necessary oversight. His criticism of them is overt: harsh, direct, scathing, even humiliating. He emphasizes issues that any manager working even in the smallest business should know and understand.” – page 13
As a practicing orthodox Catholic who reads and pays attention to current events I knew there were major financial problems at the Vatican. Having said that, I presumed that many of these problems were associated with the fallout from the stagnant global economy of the past several years. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that the problems could be attributed to a culture of corruption, inertia and gross mismanagement. The noted Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi has certainly opened my eyes with his shocking new book “Merchants in the Temple: Inside Pope Francis’s Secret Battle Against Corruption in the Vatican”. Initially I hesitated to purchase this book for fear it was just another anti-Catholic tirade. However, I found this book to be quite fair and believe the author to be sympathetic to the efforts being undertaken by the Holy Father.
There is so much troubling information in “Merchants in the Temple” that I hardly know where to begin. For decades, an entrenched group of senior clergy has been squandering Vatican resources at an alarming rate. There is a frightening lack of oversight on investments, sinful waste, blatant mismanagement of Church resources and a frightening lack of any real accountability in the bureaucracy. Meanwhile, friends and insiders are rewarded handsomely. According to Nuzzi, Pope Benedict XVI began efforts to reform the Curia some time ago and the resistance to his efforts was the primary reason that he resigned the papacy in 2013. Pope Francis has made reform of the Curia his top priority but his efforts are meeting with massive resistance from entrenched officials. One has to wonder why these men ever became priests in the first place.
In “Merchants in the Temple” you will be introduced to all of the major players in this ongoing melodrama. Nuzzi also reveals most of the major reforms being proposed by the Pontiff including a major restructuring of the governance of the Vatican. The situation is dire and I dare say that the very solvency of the Vatican is at risk here! This is magnificent piece of reporting by Gianluigi Nuzzi. Source material includes top secret documents from inside the Vatican and actual transcripts of Pope Francis’s admonishments to the papal court about the lack of financial oversight and responsibility.
We Catholics need to get our collective heads out of the sand and get up to speed on what is going on in Rome. Surveys from around the world seem to indicate that Catholics are on board with what the Pope is attempting to do because according to Francis “The people of God want pastors, not clergy acting like bureaucrats or government officials.” Touche! I think you will find that this to be a highly informative and extremely well written book. Very highly recommended!
